Animated characters (or digital avatars) are widely used in television shows, movies and computer games and are increasingly used in modern healthcare technologies.

The Digital Humans group conducts research into the modelling and understanding of real human motion for automatically animating such avatars in virtual worlds. An important focus of the team is to investigate the relationship between speech and body motion so that we can develop avatars that are capable of expressive speech and gesture. In addition, the group has an award winning track record of research in animation of Sign Language through Simon the Signer (Royal Television Society awards) and TESSA (BCS Gold Medal), and has developed a unique range of modern language teaching materials based on our signing synthesis system (LinguaSign).
