When the joke misfires: Dealing with offensive humour in online interaction

The 'Problematic Humour' project, funded by the British Academy/Leverhulme Trust, examines how offensive humour targeting particular individuals/groups is dealt with in communicative interaction.

It examines key concepts in linguistics, including the role of speakers' intentions in creating meaning, how recipients hold speakers accountable for what they have said, and how speakers can attempt to defend their humour as 'only joking'.
