Visas for Graduation

Visa advice for graduating students.

What visa do I need to return to the UK to attend my graduation ceremony?

If you have left the UK and you require a new visa to return to the UK, you will need a Standard Visitor visa (tourist). Check the GOV.UK website, if you need to apply for a visa before travelling to the UK.

If you are a national of the counties listed here then you need to get a visitor visa before you travel. If your country of nationality is not listed, then you will be able to get a standard visitor visa at the UK port of entry, providing that you have the correct documents with you.

The GOV.UK website has more information about visitor visas.

What documents do I need from the University?

Once you have registered online to attend your graduation ceremony you will receive a confirmation email. You will need to print this and include it with your visa application. The email will confirm that you have registered to attend the ceremony, the date and time of the ceremony, and the number of tickets you have requested for your guests.

You should also include the email you will receive when you have successfully completed your course.

Do I need a CAS Statement?

No, you do not need a CAS. You will not be applying for a new Tier 4 student visa, unless you are starting a new course in the UK.

I am in my home country and will travel back to the UK for my graduation ceremony. My Tier 4 visa has not expired, can I use it to return to the UK?

UK Visa and Immigration want you to have the visa for the purpose you are coming to the UK. Therefore, if you are no longer studying, a Tier 4 visa might not be acceptable. It will be the decision of the immigration officer at the border. We advise you to apply for a new visa if appropriate.

I want to invite my family/friends to attend my graduation ceremony. What type of visa do they need?

Your family and friends will need a Standard Visitor visa. Check if your family or friends need to apply for a visa before travelling to the UK.

What documents do I need from the UEA for this?

The documents will be the same as for a visa for yourself. You will receive a confirmation email once you have registered to attend graduation. This will confirm the date and time of the ceremony and the number of tickets that you have requested for your guests. You will need to send your visitor the same email to include with their Standard Visitor visa application.

You can also send your visitor a copy of the letter you will receive after you have successfully completed your course. This will come with your final mark statement and transcript.

Can I get a letter from the UEA inviting my family to attend my graduation ceremony?

No. The University is not permitted to issue letters inviting your family or friends to visit the UK. You will have to write your own letter inviting them to visit you.
