Find where you fit in business on a course designed to give you a full and holistic view of different business functions.
This one-year intensive course is ideal if you are passionate about all aspects of business and management, or want to explore different roles while keeping your options open. It’s also a great choice if you want to gain the sort of multidimensional perspective of business that will help you rise to the top.
You’ll graduate with a broad view of business, ready to work in a range of roles in any number of sectors, in both domestic and international businesses. You’ll also have the chance to develop your own unique mix of skills, by choosing optional modules from an extensive range of options. And you’ll become an expert in the theory and practice of good management.
Based in UEA’s Norwich Business School, this is our most flexible and diverse business Master’s course. There are several benefits to this breadth and flexibility. As well as discovering the intellectual and practical skills of management, you’ll have the chance to explore all the other key functions of business and discover which ones interest you the most. You can either then ocus on one area, or you can branch across disciplines, developing your own unique blend of skills. This will help you to stand out in the jobs market and carve out you own unique career path.
Some of the most successful people in business are generalists. They are the people who have a broad understanding of multiple disciplines and can see the bigger picture. They can take insights from one area and apply them to another. They can work better with different teams. And they can see problems and opportunities from different angles, identifying connections that others miss. On this course you’ll have the opportunity to discover and focus on a specialism, or develop a more holistic, generalist view of business. Either way, you will graduate with lots of options, and with the ability to bend and flex within the jobs market and the changing business world. You will also learn to understand and explain the role of management in a range of contexts. You’ll learn how to build and sustain competitive advantage for companies in a variety of sectors, in both domestic and international markets. You’ll discover how to draw on the resources and skills of company-wide specialisms.
You’ll find out how to use various analytical tools to understand different managerial perspectives, and how to make sound managerial decisions. Throughout the course you’ll find a focus on flexibility, personal development and on helping you discover and grow into the business person you aspire to be. As well as having the chance to pick up a broad range of specialist skills, you’ll develop plenty of transferable skills too, becoming highly proficient in teamwork, presenting and time management. You’ll even have the chance to start your own company at our Enterprise Centre. You will also have opportunities to identify and hone your skills with extra-curricular activities such as different business clubs and career development events.
You don’t need to have studied business before to excel on this Master’s. Equally you might have already studied or worked in a particular aspect of business but want to diversify your skills and become more multidimensional in your approach. Or you might have studied business in a different country and are looking to get a British perspective. You may have an undergrad degree in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, humanities, arts, social sciences or business. You might come straight from undergraduate study, or have already worked in industry. You might be looking to launch or restart your career, or you might aspire to turbocharge an existing career – we particularly value mature students on this course for the unique insights they bring.
Study and Modules
On this course you will design your own journey. You’ll have the freedom and flexibility to follow your interests. And if you aren’t sure what your interests are just yet, don’t worry: you’ll have lots of opportunities to discover them!
In your first semester you will begin by discovering the essentials of all the key business functions, including management, marketing, accounting, finance, operations, logistics, human resources, organisational behaviour, entrepreneurship, business creation and branding. You’ll learn from leading academics and practitioners in each field, immersing yourself in all aspects of business, learning something about everything and developing awareness of a diverse range of business issues.
You’ll study alongside students from these different specialisms too, and from all over the world, making for a true melting pot of ideas. This semester is all about exploring the different areas of business, discovering their key components, uncovering your interests and talents, and laying the foundation for deeper study and specialisation later in the course.
In your second semester you’ll begin to build your own unique set of skills, by choosing from a broad range of optional skills-based modules, such as:
- Developing Future Leaders
- E-Business Management
- Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management
- Managing Across the Globe
- Advancing Performance and HR
- Retail Marketing and Management
In semesters two and three, you will also take Management Skills and Personal Development. Here you will study the theory and practice of good management. You’ll also focus on developing your own personal brand. We’ll work together to identify your ten key strengths and then you’ll explore ways to show evidence of these strengths. You’ll study inspiring career stories, from JK Rowling to James Dyson, discovering the principles of success and applying them to your own life and career plan.
In your second and third semester, you will be able to go deeper into a particular interest, or go broader by combining several interests. You can choose modules where you’ll focus on developing your critical thinking, or opt for more skills-based, functional modules. You might decide to focus on business strategy or branding, or learn to apply what you have learned so far to the spheres of retail or marketing.
In all your modules you’ll look at business issues from a domestic and international perspective. This ensures you leave us ready to excel on the international stage, with skills that are relevant anywhere.
Optional A Modules(Credits: 60)
Optional B Modules(Credits: 20)
Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will inform students.
Teaching and Learning
You will benefit from research-based and industry-focused teaching, studying with leading academics and successful industry experts.
You’ll learn through a mix of lectures, seminars, workshops, masterclasses and independent study. There is no dissertation module on this Master’s, which means you’ll benefit from a greater number of taught modules.
You’ll develop specialist practical skills and a holistic, big-picture view of business. You’ll cultivate a range of transferable skills and hone your personal brand and career plan.
You’ll learn how to think like an entrepreneur and be resilient, enterprising, resourceful and flexible. Whatever line of business you go on to, you’ll find this ability to adapt and learn continuously to be of great benefit.
You’ll also have the chance to develop your interpersonal skills by working in simulated business environments in teams made up of several business specialisms.
You’ll experience a variety of assessment methods, including exams, coursework, group work and presentations. You will be able to submit formative and summative work for assessment, and you’ll receive feedback to help you identify areas for improvement and areas of strength.
