Tohoku University is the third oldest imperial university in Japan and is considered one of the most prestigious in the country. It was originally founded as a medical school in 1736. It is located in Sendai, the second largest city north of Tokyo.

The university has five main campuses in Sendai City. Tohoku was selected as one of 13 universities in the Global 3 Project to internationalise higher education in the country. As part of the initiative, the university offers international degrees which are taught entirely in English.
