Project Overview
Stoma Care Specialist Nursing requires extensive clinical knowledge and expertise to ensure that people living with a stoma receive holistic, person-centred and evidence-based care. This module aims to build in-depth knowledge, understanding and skills applied to all aspects of your role. You will critically evaluate and reflect on your own professional responsibilities, the context in which you practice and the diverse and complex needs of the patient populations you serve. Varied and innovative teaching and learning methods aim to develop your critical thinking, communication skills, problem-solving and decision-making appropriate, and directly applied to, an advanced level of stoma care nursing practice.
This module includes work-based learning and assessment in practice, in addition to university-based learning. This means you will need to demonstrate some clinical skills in practice and have a suitably qualified colleague assess your competence using a Practice Assessment Document. To develop and demonstrate the competencies listed in the Practice Assessment Document it is anticipated you will need to carry out at least 40 work-based learning hours during the module (which runs for 24 weeks). For this reason support from employing organization is required. Please note this is in addition to the theory components of the module.
This module advances your professional development by drawing on the four pillars of advanced practice: management and leadership, education, research and advanced clinical practice. It reinforces the core principle that advanced practice is a level of practice rather than a particular role. The module was developed in close collaboration with the Association of Stoma Care Nurses (UK) and offers five places per year funded by the Ileostomy Association. To join the module students will need to demonstrate the ability to study at level 7. This could be demonstrated through previous study at Level 7 and/or achievement of above 55% on a level 6 module and/or achievement of a 2:2 at level 6 BSc
By the end of this module you will have the ability to:
1. Apply enhanced knowledge and understanding of the diverse and complex pathways of care through which patients present for stoma forming surgery to critically evaluate how this informs each individual’s unique care needs.
2. Critically reflect on how your own values can influence the therapeutic relationship you develop with patients and colleagues and your ability to exercise professional autonomy, accountability and responsibility within your role as a stoma care specialist nurse.
3. Apply advanced knowledge and skills specific to stoma care specialist nursing practice to understand and assess complex clinical problems, plan and implement appropriate evidence-based care interventions and evaluate their effectiveness.
4. Critically evaluate and implement policies, protocols and standard operating procedures within your scope of practice and identify areas of care for which guidelines and policies require development.
5. Use critical thinking to explore and analyse evidence to enable a high level of judgement and decision making.
6. Act as an experienced work based learning educator by developing and facilitating the use of educational materials for students, staff and service users, assessing competence in stoma-related care practices and critically evaluating learning environments in which stoma care nursing is conducted.
7. Develop knowledge and critical understanding of enhanced decisionmaking, reflecting on how they can be applied to support your professional competence and relationships.
8. Develop knowledge and critical understanding of shared leadership, reflecting on how they can be applied to support your professional competence and relationships.
9. Use enhanced knowledge and understanding of the theory and practice of advanced communication to address the holistic care needs of people who are preparing for and living with a stoma.

Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules and regular (five-yearly) review of course programmes. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, there will normally be prior consultation of students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff or sabbatical leave. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will endeavour to inform students.
