What is MSc FinTech, AI and Data Science?

You’ll build a foundation in financial decision-making and explore the technologies transforming the financial sector. You’ll examine how blockchain and distributed systems are reshaping transactions and how organisations manage capital in a digital economy. Optional pathways allow you to explore concepts such as using programming to unlock insights from complex datasets, apply ethical principles to the design and deployment of AI systems and leverage digital technologies to enhance marketing strategies. These options help you build technical expertise and strategic thinking skills that are highly valued in technology-driven business environments.
Your focus will shift to advanced analytics and intelligent systems. You’ll explore how artificial intelligence and data science drive business insights and innovation. Optional pathways allow you to explore how organisations safeguard digital assets against cyber threats, use data-driven insights to optimise supply chains and harness technology to transform business operations. These options help you develop practical expertise and strategic thinking to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving digital economy.
You’ll consolidate your learning and apply it in a context that reflects your academic and professional goals. All students will engage with a module designed to provide insights into using intelligent systems for data interpretation and informed decision-making. You’ll also develop knowledge of sustainable investment principles and gain proficiency with Bloomberg’s industry-standard tools through dedicated training and certification. You can then choose to complete a dissertation, undertake an industry-focused project (subject to availability), or study two specialised taught modules. This flexible structure allows you to pursue academic research, gain practical experience, or deepen your expertise by exploring how organisations integrate sustainability into financial reporting and investment decisions, mastering the tools and techniques of project management to deliver complex initiatives and understanding how digital innovation reshapes business models and operational strategies.
Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will inform students.
Teaching and Learning
You’ll learn through lectures, seminars, workshops and hands‑on sessions focused on applying technology and data science to real business challenges. Teaching draws on industry practice and academic research, encouraging critical thinking about how emerging technologies reshape finance and business strategy. You’ll work with live financial data using Bloomberg Terminals in our FinTech Lab to develop practical analytical skills. Programming and data‑driven problem‑solving abilities are strengthened through exercises, case studies and project‑based learning within your chosen modules. You’ll collaborate in teams and work independently, building communication, leadership and problem‑solving skills for technology‑driven financial environments. Class sizes typically range from 20 to 40 students, with smaller specialised modules providing tailored support and interaction. You can also join the UEA Finance and Investment Society, gaining practical experience through peer learning, networking and student‑led fund management.
Assessment
Assessment on the MSc FinTech, AI and Data Science programme is designed to reflect the demands of professional practice and academic depth. It helps you demonstrate your ability to integrate financial knowledge with data‑driven insights and emerging technologies. Most modules include formative assessment that allows you to test your understanding and improve before final assessments. Final assessment methods build programming, data analysis, critical thinking and professional communication skills essential for technology‑driven finance. While the exact balance of assessment types may vary across modules, you can expect a mix of coursework and examinations, often supported by practical elements using Bloomberg and selected programming tools. There are no formal placements, but students undertaking an industry-focused project may gain valuable experience and insight into professional practice.

Applications from students whose first language is not English are welcome. We require evidence of proficiency in English (including writing, speaking, listening and reading):
IELTS: 6.0 overall (minimum 5.5 in each component).
