Study and Modules
Structure
The course is made up of 180 credits taught between September and the end of the following August, including taught and dissertation modules. Compulsory taught modules will give you background to the theory and practice of environmental and sustainability assessment and include a field course element to ensure that the theory is put into practice. This learning is supplemented by optional modules which add specific skills that comprise part of an environmental and/or sustainability assessment; this allows you to follow your own interests and develop a portfolio of skills that you can offer to employers.
Throughout the year, you’ll be taught the research skills necessary to enable you to undertake a research dissertation during the summer months. The same skills also support assessments across all the taught modules. Your dissertation planning will start alongside the development of research skills through the development and evaluation of a research proposal. Then once the taught component of the MSc course is complete, you’ll work full time on your dissertation until the hand in date in August. You can choose any area of focuswithin the scope of Environmental Assessment and Management for your dissertation under the expert guidance of a member of Faculty.

Teaching and Learning, and Assessment
Teaching and Learning
You’ll learn from international experts how to properly evaluate the potential impacts of proposed policies, plans or projects, drawing on best practice from around the world. You'll ‘learn by doing’, based on an approach of applying theory in practice on a weekly basis, and through a field course. You’ll investigate case studies to clearly illustrate how environmental assessment and management work to deliver more sustainable outcomes.
You’ll develop your research, communication, teamwork, and analytical skills. You'll earn the necessary expertise for a career with environmental consultancies, decision-makers, regulators, statutory consultees, and NGOs, amongst others.

Assessment
Each module has its own assessment structure to ensure you meet the learning outcomes. Most modules (including all compulsory modules) are assessed by coursework only, rather than exams. Examples include the development of environmental management plans based on visits to a business; critical evaluation of practice; preparation of policy briefs; production of a research dissertation; assessed presentations; oral examinations. Each of these are designed to fully examine the achievement of learning outcomes which are related to the professional skills needed in future careers.
In all cases, formative (practice) assessments are offered in each area to help you develop your skills and abilities before completing the summative assessment that counts towards your degree grade.

Fees and Funding
Tuition fees for the Academic Year 2027/28 are:
- UK Students: £12,950

International Students: £27,000
If you choose to study part-time, the fee per annum will be half the annual fee for that year, or a pro-rata fee for the module credit you are taking (only available for Home students).
We estimate living expenses at £1,171 per month.
