This MSc Environmental Assessment and Management course is ideal for anyone who values the socio-ecological environment and wishes to contribute to sustainable development. The part-time version of this course is designed to be completed across two years.

Study and Modules
Structure
The Environmental Assessment and Management course is made up of 180 credits, taught over two years. You’ll typically take the compulsory taught modules in year one (including two modules focusing on the theory and practice of environmental assessment and management, and a module on research skills). The dissertation can be spread across both years as you wish.
Compulsory taught modules will provide you with a foundation in the theory and practice of environmental and sustainability assessment. These modules also include a field course component to ensure that the theory is applied in practical settings.
During the first year, you'll receive instruction in research skills, which will prepare you to undertake a research dissertation during the summer months of either year. These skills will also be beneficial for assessments in all of the taught modules. Your dissertation planning will commence simultaneously with the development of research skills, which will be achieved through the creation and evaluation of a research proposal. You'll have the freedom to select any area of focus for your dissertation, provided it's within the scope of Environmental Assessment and Management and will receive expert guidance from a member of the faculty.

You’ll usually undertake the optional taught modules in your second year. These optional modules are offered to enhance your learning and develop particular skills essential in environmental assessment. This method enables you to follow your own interests and build a portfolio of skills to present to prospective employers.

Teaching and Learning, and Assessment
Teaching and Learning
You’ll learn from international experts how to properly evaluate the potential impacts of proposed policies, plans or projects, drawing on best practice from around the world. You’ll ‘learn by doing’, based on an approach of applying theory in practice on a weekly basis, and through a field course. You’ll investigate case studies to clearly illustrate how environmental assessment and management work to deliver more sustainable outcomes.
You’ll develop your research, communication, teamwork, and analytical skills. You'll earn the necessary expertise for a career with environmental consultancies, decision-makers, regulators, statutory consultees, and NGOs, amongst others.

Assessment
Each module has its own assessment structure to ensure you meet the learning outcomes. Most modules (including all compulsory modules) are assessed by coursework only, rather than exams. Examples include the development of environmental management plans based on visits to a business; critical evaluation of practice; preparation of policy briefs; production of a research dissertation; assessed presentations; oral examinations. Each of these are designed to fully examine the achievement of learning outcomes which are related to the professional skills needed in future careers.
In all cases, formative (practice) assessments are offered in each area to help you develop your skills and abilities before completing the summative assessment that counts towards your degree grade.

Tuition fees for the Academic Year 2027/28 are:

If you choose to study part-time, the fee per annum will be half the annual fee for that year, or a pro-rata fee for the module credit you are taking (only available for Home students).
