Find out moreThe placement is a compulsory part of the programme and takes place in your second year. During the first semester, you’ll build on your employability development and focus on finding and securing a suitable placement, with support from the University and our specialist placement partner.
Placements typically last eight to ten months and take place with a UK organisation. Our specialist partner provides tailored guidance throughout the placement search, helping you develop your application skills and maximise your chances of securing a suitable paid role.
While you’ll receive comprehensive support, finding and securing a suitable placement is ultimately your responsibility. You’ll need to engage fully with the employability programme and work closely with our placement partner throughout the process.
If you’re unable to secure a placement, or don’t meet the academic requirements for the placement route, you’ll have the opportunity to complete three employer-led industry projects with different UK organisations. These projects will allow you to apply your learning to real-world challenges and gain valuable professional experience.

Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will inform students.
Your second year is designed to give you meaningful experience of applying your HR knowledge in a professional setting. You’ll have the opportunity to undertake an industry placement relevant to your area of study, with the first semester focused on preparing for and securing your placement. You’ll receive ongoing support from our specialist placement partner, alongside six in-person workshops at UEA.
If you’re unable to secure an industry placement, you’ll instead work on three employer-led projects with different UK organisations. These projects allow you to apply your learning to real-world challenges and gain practical experience of working with employers.
You’ll reflect on your placement experience through an assessment comprising a portfolio of your placement search activities and a reflective report. This will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your development, consider the skills you’ve gained and identify your future career direction. The module is assessed on a pass/fail basis.
By the end of your second year, you’ll have developed practical experience, strengthened your professional network and increased your confidence in the workplace, giving you a strong foundation for your next career step in the UK or internationally.
