What is MSc Finance and Management with a Placement Year?

The curriculum combines core principles in finance and organisational behaviour with opportunities to specialise in areas such as marketing strategy, entrepreneurship, governance, and change leadership. In your second year, you’ll take part in a placement, gaining valuable real-world experience.

Placement Year
An integrated placement year gives you valuable UK industry experience as part of your Master’s degree.
In year one, you’ll complete your studies, including your dissertation, alongside an employability programme preparing you for UK work.
In year two, you’ll secure an industry placement or complete three employer-led industry projects with different UK organisations. This lets you apply your learning professionally, strengthen your CV with UK experience, and boost your global career prospects.
You’ll lead the search for your placement, supported by employability workshops, coaching, and guidance from our specialist placement partner.
If a placement isn't available, you'll complete three employer-led industry projects with organisations across a range of UK sectors.

Study and Modules
Structure
You’ll explore the foundations of financial technology and organisational behaviour, examining how emerging technologies are transforming financial decision-making and how leadership, governance and people management influence organisational performance. You’ll develop core analytical and strategic skills while considering responsible business practices and the role of innovation in modern organisations.
Optional pathways allow you to tailor your studies to your interests, with opportunities to explore areas such as strategic brand positioning, financial decision-making within corporate settings, and the ethical and responsible use of emerging technologies, including AI, to support innovation and improve business performance.
You’ll develop your understanding of financial responsibility and the structure of financial services, exploring how financial institutions operate, how organisations manage risk and how strategic decisions are made in complex environments. Optional modules provide opportunities to explore entrepreneurial thinking, innovation strategy, digital transformation and governance structures shaping decision-making in international contexts. This flexible approach allows you to examine the relationship between finance and management in dynamic organisational environments.
You’ll apply your learning to areas aligned with your academic and professional interests. Alongside a core module in investment and risk management, you can choose to complete a dissertation, undertake an industry-focused project (subject to availability), or study specialised taught modules. This flexibility allows you to pursue academic research, gain practical experience or deepen your understanding of topics including sustainability, project management and the strategic and operational challenges facing organisations in a global business environment.
You’ll also complete two zero-credit modules designed to enhance your practical financial skills and industry readiness. These include an ESG investment strategies module using Bloomberg and a year-long module preparing you for the Bloomberg Market Concepts certificate.
To support your transition into the workplace and prepare you for your placement year, you’ll undertake a year-long Employability Skills module. Through workshops, CV writing support, interview practice and LinkedIn guidance, you’ll develop the skills needed to search for and secure a placement. You’ll also receive one-to-one support to plan your application strategy and practise mock interviews. The module is assessed on a pass/fail basis, and successful completion, including meeting attendance requirements, is required to progress to your placement year.

You’ll receive support throughout your placement search through one-to-one guidance and in-person workshops designed to strengthen your applications and prepare you for the recruitment process.
If you’re unable to secure a placement, you’ll complete three employer-led industry projects with organisations across a range of UK sectors, providing an alternative opportunity to gain practical experience and develop workplace skills.
The module is assessed on a pass/fail basis through a portfolio documenting your placement search and a reflective report on your placement or industry project experience.
Through your placement experience, you’ll strengthen your CV, expand your professional network, gain insight into your chosen sector and develop the confidence to progress in your career, whether in the UK or internationally.

Active learning through case studies, simulations, and industry‑focused projects provides practical experience supported by Bloomberg certification. Class sizes typically range from 20 to 40 students, with smaller specialised modules providing tailored support and interaction. You can also join the UEA Finance and Investment Society, gaining practical experience through peer learning, networking, and student‑led fund management.
Assessment
Assessment on the MSc Finance and Management programme is designed to reflect the demands of professional practice and academic depth. Assessment methods will vary across modules and may include written coursework, analytical reports, formal examinations, and applied assignments simulating real business decisions.
