What is MSc Economics?
Is it possible for policymakers to achieve environmentally sustainable economic growth? These are just a few of the complex questions this exciting MSc in Economics will equip you to tackle.
You’ll dive deep into core areas such as microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, as well as advanced econometrics—both theoretical and applied. But this course isn’t one-size-fits-all. You’ll have the freedom to shape your learning around your interests and career goals, selecting from a wide range of interesting optional modules aligned with the research strengths of the School of Economics: Finance, Environmental Economics and Data Science.
Your dissertation is the capstone of this MSc. It gives you the opportunity to apply your skills to a research topic of your choice, with expert guidance. You may also choose to collaborate with external organisations, gaining valuable work-based experience.

After the Course
Upon completing this MSc, you can pursue a variety of careers as a professional economist in government, industry, international agencies and other similar organisations. Past graduates from the School of Economics have gone on to work for HM Treasury, the Home Office, Bank of England, Aviva, Barclays, M+A Partners, BDO, Deloitte, Ernst and Young, Goldman Sachs, Grant Thornton, HSBC, JP Morgan, KPMG, Lloyds, PwC and Santander, amongst others.
You'll also be well qualified to enter a PhD programme with a view to pursuing an academic career. Many of our former PhD students now hold academic posts as lecturers or professors in university departments in the UK and overseas.
Study and Modules
Structure
This MSc in Economics is a 12-month course, commencing with the pre-sessional course in September.
You’ll receive rigorous training in core areas of economics, including microeconomics and econometric theory, followed by modules in macroeconomics and applied econometrics. You’ll also have the opportunity to customise your learning by selecting specialist modules that align with your interests and career goals.
To prepare for your dissertation, you’ll attend a series of training lectures covering how to choose a topic, access data, conduct literature reviews, and analyse quantitative data. You’ll also benefit from additional lab-based dissertation workshops.

Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Teaching and Learning

With an international reputation across both theoretical and applied economics, we’re home to world-leading expertise in areas such as behavioural economics, competition policy, environmental economics, corporate strategy, finance, and data science.
From day one, you’ll be set up for success with our intensive pre-sessional training, ensuring you’re confident in core areas like calculus, matrix algebra, and the econometric software STATA.
Each of your modules will be taught across two semesters, blending lectures with seminars or lab sessions each week. While lectures introduce key concepts, seminars and labs are highly interactive, giving you the chance to explore ideas in more depth and ask questions.
In your econometrics modules, you’ll gain hands-on experience with STATA, a specialist software package used widely by professional economists, equipping you with essential skills for data analysis and research. At the same time, you’ll gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge online data sources, empowering you to carry out impactful research.
You'll also become practised in independent study, spending time working on coursework assignments, preparing for seminars, and doing your own wider reading. These skills become particularly valuable when you come to work on your dissertation.
Assessment
Your assessments will be in a variety of forms, including formal examinations, take-home assignments, seminar presentations, written tests, computer tests, and your dissertation.
Some assessments require you to use AI technologies. In these tasks, you'll learn to harness AI’s capabilities positively and constructively, with a strong emphasis on critically evaluating AI outputs.
You’ll regularly be given formative assessment tasks, providing opportunities to practise assessment activities without affecting your module marks. When marked assessments are returned, you’ll receive constructive written feedback to help you continue improving.

Applications from students whose first language is not English are welcome. We require evidence of proficiency in English (including writing, speaking, listening and reading):
