As a UEA Mental Health Nursing graduate, you'll be a skilled healthcare professional ready to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). You can work in a wide range of settings, including hospitals, community services, schools, and specialist mental health teams. Graduates can choose to develop expertise in different areas of mental health or take on roles in diverse healthcare environments, making a meaningful difference to the lives of individuals, families and communities.
In your first year, you'll explore the foundations of nursing, developing essential clinical, communication and professional skills. You’ll study the biological and behavioural sciences that underpin nursing practice and examine mental health from both individual and societal perspectives. Recovery-focused and values-based care are introduced, alongside reflective practice and leadership concepts, helping you understand your role within multidisciplinary teams. Clinical placements allow you to apply theoretical learning, practice professional behaviours, and begin building confidence in patient-centered care.
Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. In the second year, you'll deepen your understanding of mental health nursing and care for individuals with diverse and complex needs. Experience across a range of clinical settings, including acute, community, and public health services, enables you to apply therapeutic skills in practice. Leadership and professional development continue throughout, supporting teamwork, communication, and patient advocacy. Evidence-informed practice, critical thinking, and reflective skills are emphasised, helping you respond effectively to evolving mental health needs and contemporary challenges in care delivery.

Teaching and Learning
The BSc Mental Health Nursing course combines theory and practice using diverse teaching methods. Learning is interactive, reflective, and focused on professional development. You’ll engage in lectures, seminars, workshops, simulation exercises, and clinical placements to develop both knowledge and practical skills. Leadership, teamwork, and values-based care are embedded throughout all learning activities.
Assessment
Assessment is designed to evaluate knowledge, practical skills, professional behaviour, and reflective capacity across all three years. A range of assessment methods ensure you can demonstrate competency in both academic and clinical contexts. Formative feedback supports ongoing development and confidence in practice.
In year one, you’ll be assessed through written assignments, reflective journals, practical skills demonstrations and practice-based evaluations.
Year two assessments include case studies, presentations, skills assessments, and supervised clinical evaluations to measure applied knowledge and professional development.
Year three assessment comprises a dissertation, complex clinical skills evaluations, leadership and reflective practice assignments and final practice-based competency assessments.

Placement allocation primarily takes place across a variety of settings, which may include hospitals, community services, general practice, social services, and voluntary or private organisations. These placements are located throughout the counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, and Cambridgeshire.
As this course includes patient facing placements in health or social care settings, and these are a mandatory component of the course, you will need to comply with the placement vaccination policy. Failure to meet the placement vaccination policy may prevent you from joining the course or may lead to your withdrawal from the course in the future. Future employment may also be subject to this condition.
We welcome applications from students who have already taken or intend to take a gap year. We believe that a year between school and university can be of substantial benefit. You are advised to indicate your reason for wishing to defer entry on your UCAS application.
