If you’re fascinated by the complexity of mathematics and you enjoy statistics, our BSc Mathematics and Statistics with a Placement Year degree will equip you with a broad range of skills in both disciplines, and give you a head start in the job market with real-word experience. This degree includes elements of data analytics, financial statistics, and modelling. Our graduates find themselves with many exciting career options across a broad range of fields including science, technology, and finance.
This degree combines a strong mathematical foundation, with advanced study in both mathematics and statistics. You’ll study pure mathematics, applied mathematics and statistics, whilst also having the choice to tailor your degree by choosing topics from a wide range of optional modules.
You’ll spend your third year on a full-time placement lasting nine to 14 months, working for a business or organisation. You’ll put theoretical work into professional practice, gaining a real advantage for when you graduate.
Our lecturers are highly enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Most are also active researchers who conduct world-leading work that’s incorporated into their teaching. You’ll benefit from a high academic-staff-to-student ratio, ensuring that you graduate with a deep understanding of the subjects you’re learning.
Since the first year of this programme is common to the other Mathematics degrees we offer, it’s possible to transfer between courses at the end of your first year. We’ll help you discuss your options to ensure that you’re on the right programme to suit your interests and career aspirations.

Placement Year
You’ll spend the third year of your four-year degree on a placement lasting between nine and fourteen months of full-time employment. Whilst it’s your responsibility to source and secure the placement, we’ll provide plenty of support—including guidance, resources, and opportunities to connect with employers.
Throughout your placement year, you’ll be supported by both a workplace supervisor and a dedicated UEA mentor. Regular check-ins and feedback will ensure your experience is progressing smoothly, and your university mentor will visit you during the year to stay closely involved.
If you're unable to secure a placement or decide it's not the right path for you, you’ll have the option to transfer to the equivalent three-year degree programme.

After the Course
There are many rewarding professions associated with mathematics and statistics, such as accountancy, banking and finance, logistics and planning, data analysis, and actuarial science. Other careers open to you after graduation are in areas where logical thought and problem-solving are important. These include information technology, engineering, project management, central or local government, as well as other business areas. Many of our graduates also choose to continue their studies at postgraduate level.
The School of Mathematics works together with the University’s Careers Service to offer support to you at every stage of your course, from finding paid or voluntary work opportunities and choosing a career, through to applying for graduate jobs.

All applicants must hold or be working towards GCSEs in English Language and Mathematics at minimum grade 4 or grade C.

AAB including Mathematics. grade A in Mathematics.
If Further Mathematics being taken: ABB including grade A in Mathematics and B in Further Mathematics.

BTEC
Level 3 Extended Diploma: DDD plus grade A in A level Mathematics.
Where applicable Science A Levels awarded by an English Exam board require a pass in the practical element. Critical Thinking & General Studies are not accepted.
Combinations of BTEC and A levels
Extended Diploma: DDD plus grade A in A level Mathematics.
Diploma: DD plus grade A in A level Mathematics.

Pass Access to HE Diploma with Distinction in 36 credits at Level 3 and Merit in 9 credits at Level 3 including 12 credits in Mathematics at Distinction.

Depending on your interests, and your qualifications you can take a variety of routes to this degree.

Course Related Costs
You’re eligible for reduced fees during your placement year. Further details are available on the UEA Tuition Fees web pages. There may be extra costs related to items such as travel and accommodation during your placement year, which will vary depending on location.
There are no other additional course fees or related costs for our mathematics degrees. You may wish to consult textbooks, but these can be accessed through our Library, so you don’t need to purchase your own copies. A laptop or tablet computer may be useful, but there are ample computing facilities available on campus for you to use.
