What is MSc Global Plant Health?
Develop the knowledge and skills to become a future leader in plant health and help address some of the world's most important agricultural challenges. You'll explore sustainable approaches to tackling plant pests and diseases, with a focus on reducing reliance on chemical interventions and improving global food security.
The course combines topics including molecular plant-microbe interactions, plant pathology, experimental approaches, data science, and leadership. You'll then join one of our research groups to complete a five-month research project alongside leading scientists.
You'll also learn from alumni and researchers across the Norwich Research Park(opens in a new window), building valuable connections within a global network of plant health experts. This programme has been accredited by the Royal Society of Biology following an independent and rigorous assessment. Accredited degree programmes contain a solid academic foundation in biological knowledge and key skills, and prepare graduates to address the needs of employers. The accreditation criteria require evidence that graduates from accredited programmes meet defined sets of learning outcomes, including subject knowledge, technical ability and transferable skills.

Graduates have progressed into research positions, entrepreneurial internships, biosecurity roles, and careers across the biotechnology sector. Around half of our graduates go on to PhD study at leading institutions worldwide, while others move directly into industry, policy, or innovation-focused careers.
This MSc in molecular plant science in the UK combines taught elements followed by a five-month research project— all of which are exclusive to this programme. You’ll attend weekly research seminars at The Sainsbury Laboratory, which form an integral part of your learning experience throughout the year.
You’ll explore global plant health, studying major crops and their pathogens, disease diagnosis, and the biology behind plant-pathogen interactions. You’ll evaluate the strengths and limitations of traditional and modern crop improvement techniques, within the context of plant pathology and food security.
You’ll study molecular plant–microbe interactions, gaining insight into the mechanisms of pathogenesis within plant science. This includes how plants recognize pathogens, develop immunity, and the strategies pathogens evolve to overcome these defences. This fundamental scientific understanding is essential for creating innovative and effective methods to control plant diseases.
You’ll also explore experimental approaches used to understand and combat plant diseases. These focus on practical techniques for diagnosis and discovery. You’ll learn key concepts of experimental design and gain hands-on experience with core protocols in plant health.
You’ll study data science and informatics for plant disease research, exploring bioinformatic and computational approaches to understand and tackle plant health challenges. You’ll discover how many breakthrough discoveries are rooted in the ever-expanding range of genomic resources now available.
You’ll develop skills in leadership, project management, and global disease response strategies. You’ll learn how science can be applied to make a real-world impact. This includes understanding how diverse agencies worldwide collaborate to manage outbreaks successfully. You’ll cover models of management and leadership, project lifecycles, communication, teamwork, risk management, conflict resolution, intellectual property, and navigating legal, policy, and resource constraints.
Your taught studies culminate in a final interdisciplinary research project. You'll carry out laboratory and/or computational work, hypothesis development. You'll learn how to integrate your findings into broader response strategies for optimal impact. You’ll be able to specialize in a chosen area of plant health research. This will culminate in a detailed report and an oral presentation that showcases your achievements.
Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will inform students.
Teaching and Learning
You'll learn through a combination of lectures, online workbooks, workshops, practical sessions, self-directed study, and your own presentations. Contact time with instructors will typically be 10-15 hours per week. The teaching is in a single dedicated teaching space with laptops provided. All teaching is within the The Sainsbury Laboratory building allowing easy access to all instructors.
The student numbers are limited, allowing a learning experience that can easily adjust to the cohorts’ needs. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend seminars across Norwich Research Park(opens in a new window), expanding your knowledge even further.
Assessment
We use a range of assessment approaches to ensure everyone’s strengths are captured. Some written assessments are in-class while others are not. Some assessments include a short viva, while others are oral presentations. Some require AI while others exclude AI.
Each summative assessment has a prior, associated formative assessment to enhance your learning. Written feedback is provided along with verbal feedback.

The Course Directors will assess each application based on the level of knowledge and experience of the following: molecular biology, genetics, molecular interactions, data science such as bioinformatics and statistics, laboratory skills, and independent study.
Applicants are required to submit two references with their application - at least one of these must be related to your most recent academic study.
