The course is structured to include a series of taught modules and a dissertation module. The course duration is 12 months for full-time study, or 24 or 36 months on a part-time basis.
The modules are classified into two categories: compulsory and optional. There are compulsory modules in the course that cover advanced AI, professional skills and the dissertation. The remaining modules are taken from a range of around ten optional modules that cover programming, AI and various applications of AI.
To balance workload, for full-time study, you should do taught modules in each of two semesters. The dissertation module starts in the second semester but only requires you to study the background literature and write a project proposal. You’ll work on your dissertation on a full-time basis through the summer to the deadline in late August. For part-time, fewer taught modules are taken each year to spread the course out over a longer period. Your academic advisor will be available to support you in selecting module options before or shortly after your course begins.
Whilst the University will make every effort to offer the modules listed, changes may sometimes be made arising from the annual monitoring, review and update of modules. Where this activity leads to significant (but not minor) changes to programmes and their constituent modules, the University will endeavour to consult with students and others. It is also possible that the University may not be able to offer a module for reasons outside of its control, such as the illness of a member of staff. In some cases optional modules can have limited places available and so you may be asked to make additional module choices in the event you do not gain a place on your first choice. Where this is the case, the University will inform students.
Taught modules are typically delivered with a series of lectures that are then underpinned by laboratory classes and sometimes seminars. The typical structure for teaching a module begins with a two-hour lecture, followed by a two-hour laboratory exercise. These are normally timetabled to be on the same day for the convenience of part-time students.
Additionally, for each module, you should allocate approximately four to eight hours per week for independent study and coursework assignments.
Coursework is completed either individually or through group work. For group work, groups usually consist of two or three students, either formed by the students themselves or allocated by the lecturers.
The dissertation is based on a practical, real-world project. Full-time students select their project in the spring semester and complete the work over the summer. Part-time students choose their project in the penultimate year and undertake the dissertation in the final year.
Assessments are carried out largely by coursework assignments and possibly lab tests or examinations, depending on the individual module. For this course, nearly all modules are assessed through two coursework assignments of varying weight, designed to develop real-world problem-solving skills and practical experience.
The dissertation is assessed by practical demonstration or presentation and oral examination.
Teaching and Learning
We teach a variety of programming and scripting languages including Java, Python, C and C++, SQL, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You’ll be working with the software development tools and practices used in the industry right now, getting up to speed with the system development and database principles, gaining computing mathematics fundamental knowledge, practicing professional and employable skills, and building your programming expertise. Teaching methods include team-based learning and hands-on practical experience.
You’ll learn through a mixture of lectures, seminars, and lab sessions. Your lab and seminar classes reinforce and expand the lecture materials.
Alongside your formal learning, you’ll study independently to gain a deeper appreciation of specialist topics.
Assessment
We use a range of assessment methods throughout our degree programmes. These include coding, written work, oral presentations or demonstrations, bench demonstrations, vivas, exams, and in-class tests (closed and/or time-limited assessments). These methods will assess both your theoretical understanding and your practical application of knowledge. Assessments are specifically designed to evaluate the full range of skills and competencies required for the learning objectives of each module.

Applications from students whose first language is not English are welcome. We require evidence of proficiency in English (including writing, speaking, listening and reading):
IELTS: 6.0 overall with minimum 5.5 in each component.

Test dates should be within 2 years of the course start date.
If you do not meet the English language requirements for this course, UEA International Study Centre offers a variety of English language programmes which are designed to help you develop the required English skills.

Tuition fees for the Academic Year 2026/27 are:

If you choose to study part-time, the fee per annum will be half the annual fee for that year, or a pro-rata fee for the module credit you are taking (only available for Home students).
