UEA strive to create an Accessible Campus, so all our students can be fully involved in the range of services and experiences on offer.
Find out more about accessible routes across campus, parking, accessible accommodation, accessible library services and quiet spaces.
Campus mapAccessible routes – routes without any stairs – are marked on the map in orange and white dashed lines. These are mirrored on campus where orange-dashed lines indicate the accessible routes.
By clicking the ‘Accessibility’ feature, you will see what disabled toilets are available around campus, what ramps there are for wheelchair users when wanting to change levels, as well as what lifts are available around campus – see next section for more information on lifts.
Accommodation
UEA campus has a range of accommodation options to suit different needs. This includes ground floor accessible and adapted rooms, Deaf-enabled rooms, allergy rooms and flats with a smaller number of students. We have more information on accommodation options for students with disabilities, where you can view adapted rooms and find out how to apply. Please contact the Accommodation Team directly via accom@uea.ac.uk if you have any accommodation specific enquiries.
Transport and Parking
There are direct bus routes to UEA campus from Norwich City Centre. Students also have access to the Park and Ride. Some students need to access parking on campus due to disability-related reasons. Closer to the start of term, incoming students can contact the UEA Transport Team to request a parking permit.
Accessible Library Services
UEA Library offers an amazing range of accessibility services for our students. These include:
Support with orientating yourself to the Library, both the physical and online space
Help with finding and collecting books
Accessing eBooks
Accessibility tools and software available on Library computers
Adjustable workstations to meet your physical needs.
Accessible Technology
Students can access course materials in a range of formats, such as Audio file, using Blackboard Ally.
Students also have access to Sensus Access, a free to use self-service conversion tool for creating documents in accessible formats.
We can work with students to explore what technology is needed to assist in teaching spaces, such as hearing loops.
UEA can signpost students to guides and information on how to make best use of assistive technology.
Quiet Spaces
There are lots of quiet space on campus if you need to relax, or simply wish to not be disturbed for a while.
The Quiet Space is a room at the heart of the campus, designed to provide a quiet and peaceful space for students all year round. With bean bags to rest or sleep on, headphones to block out sounds and low lighting, students are welcome to use the low stimulus space as needed. It is in the Union House, upstairs along from Scholars Bar.
UEA Faith Centre has two Quiet Rooms for individuals or small groups to spend time in contemplation or prayer. Faith is not a prerequisite to use the Faith Centre and everyone is welcome.
There are also silent study spaces in UEA Library.
Head Space at the Library is a similar quiet, relaxation zone and is located within the silent reading area on floor 1 of the Library.
You can always utilise campus bookable rooms to book yourself a space at a time that suits you.
A peaceful walk around the beautiful UEA lake is a good option too!
Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs)
Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) and Access to Buildings – make contact with Student Services if you may have difficulty exiting a building in event of a fire, such as difficulty getting downstairs, and we will arrange for Safety Services to get in touch with you. Please also get in touch with us if you can use stairs in an emergency but may struggle using stairs on a regular basis because of your disability or health condition.
Notification of Medical Condition (NOMC)
NOMCs are created for students who have a medical condition or disability that may cause a seizure, anaphylaxis, hypo- or hyperglycaemia or other adverse event. Student Services work with students to create a document which is shared with relevant departments within the University (such as Accommodation, and Security) so that First Aiders and Paramedic Staff can be informed.
