AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards

Arts and Humanities

We are proud to be an award grant holder for the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Doctoral Landscape Awards, offering fully funded PhD studentships to support and provide high-quality doctoral training.

UEA is one of only 50 institutions nationally to offer AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards, and the AHRC will support up to 50 doctoral studentships per year for up to four years through this scheme. From 2026/27 onwards, UEA will provide funding for three fully funded PhD studentships per year to support and inspire a new generation of doctoral students. This will amount to 15 doctoral studentships, over the course of five years, in addition to UEA’s Faculty funded studentships.

Innovative Research

Priority will be given to innovative, well-developed proposals that engage with one of UEA’s core interdisciplinary research themes: CreativeUEAClimateUEA, or HealthUEA. Applications across a range of doctoral pathways are invited, including written theses, creative-critical PhDs and professional practice doctorates.

Training and Placements

In addition to the training and support available to all UEA postgraduate researchers, award holders will benefit from specialist opportunities provided by the AHRC Doctoral Landscape Hub, led by King’s College London. Each award provides funding for 3.5 years (or part-time equivalent), covering tuition fees and a stipend at the UKRI minimum rate. An optional additional six months of funding will also be available for employability-related activities such as industry placements or specialist training.

Widening Participation

As part of the University’s commitment to widening and diversifying doctoral opportunities, at least one studentship annually will be awarded to a candidate from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented at this level of study.

Applications

The first cohort of AHRC DLA funded students will start in October 2026.
