British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships 2026/27

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities at UEA invites potential applicants wishing to hold a three-year Fellowship at UEA from autumn 2027 to submit an outline application to the Faculty by 9am on Wednesday 10th June 2026.

 

British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships are designed to offer opportunities for outstanding early career researchers to strengthen their experience of research and teaching. More information on this call can be found at: Postdoctoral Fellowships | The British Academy

The successful applicant will join a vibrant community of postdoctoral research fellows and academic researchers and will be fully integrated into the life of their host School. UEA is fully committed to supporting the scholarship and career development of our fellows.  

 

To apply at UEA for this fellowship please do the following things:

  • Please read the call information at www.britac.ac.uk/british-academy-postdoctoral-fellowships and check that you are eligible to apply. 

  • Contact a suitable mentor within the FAH faculty. The mentor should be an established and experienced member of staff and be in an academic field close to the applicant’s own. Applications without a mentor will not be considered.

  • Complete the outline application form in collaboration with your potential mentor.

  • Submit your fully completed outline form by 9am Wednesday 10th June 2026 to sarah.l.russell@uea.ac.uk

This British Academy call is extremely competitive and there will be an internal selection process to select the strongest candidate(s) to apply to the British Academy fellowship call.

BA assessors evaluate the project’s scholarly significance, the applicant’s ability, and its feasibility, along with the applicant’s publication record (recognising their early career stage). The internal panel applies the same criteria when selecting applications to support.

Outcomes will be communicated to everyone who applied by 30th June 2026.

Invited applicants will be supported by their mentor and the UEA Research and Innovation Services with their applications to the British Academy.

How to apply

The information below is based on the 2025/26 scheme and may therefore change when the 2026/27 scheme opens.

1. Please read the scheme information at www.britac.ac.uk/british-academy-postdoctoral-fellowships and check that you are eligible to apply.

The British Academy does not allow unsuccessful applicants to reapply to this scheme. If you have previously applied and failed to reach the Second Stage of the competition, you are not eligible to re-apply unless you have been invited to do so by the Academy.

2. Identify a mentor at UEA and discuss your outline application with them before submitting it. Applications submitted without a mentor will not be considered.

UEA’s process for selecting and supporting applicants

  1. All applications will be considered by members of the Faculty Research Executive based on research excellence. This includes, inter alia, the scholarly importance of the project; your ability to carry out the research successfully; the feasibility of the proposed research project, especially the proposed methodology and timescale; the volume of research already in the field; and your publication record to date. Successful candidates will need to demonstrate in their application a clear research trajectory and some standing in their field. You must also demonstrate that you meet the British Academy’s eligibility criteria.

  2. All applicants will receive feedback by 30th June.

  3. Selected applicants will be supported by their mentor, who will work with them on their application and guide them as they go through the Arts and Humanities peer review process and UEA’s process for applying.

Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) European Postdoctoral Fellowships 

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of East Anglia (UEA) invites potential applicants wishing to apply to the MSCA European Postdoctoral Fellowships 2025 call to submit an expression of interest to their selection process within the Social Sciences and Humanities panel

MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships enhance the creative and innovative potential of researchers who wish to acquire new skills through advanced training, international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility. MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships are open to excellent researchers of any nationality who wish to come to or move within the UK and Europe.

 

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply:

  • The researcher must be in possession of a doctoral degree or have successfully defended their doctoral thesis before call deadline (10th September).

  • The researcher cannot have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the beneficiary (UK) for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately prior to the call deadline.

  • The researcher must have a maximum of 8 years research experience from the date of award of the (first) doctoral degree (years of experience outside research and career breaks will not count towards the above maximum, nor will years of experience in research in third countries, for nationals or long-term residents of EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries who wish to reintegrate to Europe)

 

What is funded

The fellowship provides funding for a generous cost-of-living, mobility allowance and if applicable a family allowance. The duration of the fellowship can be between 12 and 24 months.  Proposals may include an optional secondment during the fellowship and/or an optional non-academic placement period, provided they are in line with the project objectives and add significant value and/or impact to the fellowship.

 

Process to apply

Potential applicants are invited to work with a supervisor at the University of East Anglia to submit an expression of interest form and two-page CV to the Arts and Humanities Faculty selection process.  The deadline for the sift is 16th June 9am (UK time).  The process to apply is:

  1. Identify a potential supervisor from UEA with a suitable profile who could be interested in supporting your project. Ask them to supervise your research and if they agree, work with them on the expression of interest form to the internal stage of the recruitment process.

  2. Submit the application composed of the expression of interest form and a 2-page CV by 16th June 9am (UK time) to hum.research@uea.ac.uk.

  3. Candidates who are successful at the internal UEA sift panel will be notified by 9th July and supported by their supervisors to submit their application for the MSCA Fellowship with HUM UEA Faculty as a host institution.
