MSc Economics and Data Science
Where are you from, and what are you studying?
I’m from the Dominican Republic and I am studying MSc Economics and Data Science.
Could you tell us about the scholarship you hold.
I have the Chevening Scholarship, this is an international program funded by the UK government, designed to support students globally. In 2023 there were 71,912 applications and 1,364 scholarship recipients were selected, of which I am fortunate to be one.
Do you have a favourite module, and can you tell us why?
It is a challenge to choose just one favourite module, because each one is incredibly interesting and the teachers' dedication to our learning is exceptional. In Econometric Theory I find immense satisfaction in being able to immediately apply what we learn. This practice makes it much easier to understand the theory by seeing its real-world applications in action. In Programming Analytics, I am fascinated by the innovative approach of the class, especially the opportunity to learn Python from scratch. Finally, in Economic Theory, I really liked the connection between the concepts we learn and current events. This bond allowed us to develop our analytical skills and improve our writing skills.
In your opinion, what has been the best or the most unexpected so far at UEA?
For me, it has been the balance that the university offers between academic and personal life. The range of extracurricular activities that exists is impressive, and this is in addition to all the events organised by the university. These extracurricular events have allowed me to meet people from many different fields and ages, which I did not expected before arriving.
What do you do for socialising, or any other extra-curricular activities?
I love walking around Norwich city centre and trying all of the different food options available. I have joined the Latin social dance society; the dance classes are a lot of fun and have helped me feel close to my country and my culture in some way. I also joined the Archery club, where I have met many wonderful people and for the first time, I have acquired the discipline of practicing a sport.
What message do you have for those who are thinking of applying to UEA?
I would tell you that applying to UEA has been one of the best decisions of my life. On an academic level, I have found a lot of help to adapt and learn, from the personal guidance of the professors to the live recordings of the class. On a personal level, there are so many activities that adapt to everyone’s interests, so you will always find something to do, and you will have the opportunity to meet new people and get to know versions of yourself that you didn't even know.

Where are you from, and what are you studying?
I am studying in the MSc Economics program. I am also interested in Competition Policy, so I attend lectures and I’m taking classes through the PGCert in Competition Policy program run by the Centre for Competition Policy.
Could you tell us about the scholarship you hold.
I hold a Fulbright Scholarship, awarded through the US-UK Fulbright Commission.
Do you have a favourite module, and can you tell us why?
My favourite module is Finance. Given my interest in regulation, it is fascinating to see economic theory applied in real-world business decisions.
In your opinion, what has been the best or the most unexpected so far at UEA?
The people! I love the collaborative atmosphere among my classmates. I have made some great friends through my program, who I study with (and also hang out with). The professors are also incredibly accessible and approachable.
What do you do for socialising, or any other extra-curricular activities?
I am involved in the Mountaineering club! I have been on three weekend trips so far, have made some great friends, and go to a pub quiz with them every week!
What message do you have for those who are thinking of applying to UEA?
Apply! UEA has incredible academics, a supportive atmosphere, and great opportunities to allow you to get involved in your academic interests outside of the classroom.
