My name is Azizah Azie, and I am from Cambodia, and I study MSc Economics and International Relations.

My MSc journey at University of East Anglia (UEA) was a transformative chapter that shaped both my personal and professional growth. I particularly enjoyed courses like Applied Econometrics and Economics Concepts, which gave me a solid foundation in understanding and analysing economics trends and decision-making processes. The supporting faculty made even the most complex topics engaging and accessible. Their diverse teaching methods, including interactive in-class experiments and real-world applications, brought the subject matter to life. These approaches not only made learning enjoyable but also helped students grasp concepts with greater ease and confidence.

Studying at UEA was a transformative experience that extended beyond academics, teaching me to think critically and adapt to challenges. The program emphasized practical applications, such as analysing real-world data using econometric tools like STATA. Initially intimidating, learning STATA became straightforward and enjoyable thanks to the supportive guidance of lecturers and PhD students. This not only enhanced my confidence but also refined my analytical skills. Courses like International Relations Theory, Multinational Firms and International Trade offered an excellent balance of theoretical knowledge and practical examples. They deepened my understanding of how global politics and economics intersect, while also sharpening my ability to evaluate economic policies and trade agreements. These insights provided a solid foundation for my dissertation, which examined the role of institutions in economic freedom and growth. The support of my supervisor and access to extensive university resources made the process both challenging and rewarding. The skills I gained during my MSc - critical thinking, analytical abilities, and a deeper understanding of global systems - have seamlessly translated into my current role, allowing me to tackle challenges with clarity and confidence.

In UEA, the university’s career services team like Employability events was instrumental in preparing students for the job market. The arrangements by the employability teams were helpful for students to realize what they wanted to pursuit after graduation. This event also gives me a chance to networking with alumni and broadened my understanding of career paths in economics and international relations. I also attended workshops on CV writing, interviewing skills and networking strategies. These sessions not only boosted my confidence but also helped me secure a position shortly after graduation.

Meeting with classmates from around the world helped me develop a global perspective, which I believe is essential for navigating today’s interconnected world. Collaborating with peers from diverse cultures and backgrounds enriched my understanding of different viewpoints, approaches, and solutions to problems. For instance, sharing ideas with classmates who had different educational backgrounds challenged me to think critically and look at problems from various angles. These experiences not only broadened my perspective but also instilled in me a sense of global citizenship. I developed skills in cultural sensitivity, teamwork, and conflict resolution, all of which are vital in today’s interconnected world. These connections have not only enhanced my academic journey but have also created lifelong relationships that continue to inspire and support me in both my personal and professional life.

The Economics lecturers and staff at UEA played a crucial role in making my MSc experience smooth and enjoyable. Their friendly and approachable nature created an environment where I always felt comfortable reaching out for help or guidance. They were incredibly responsive, ensuring that any concerns or questions I had were addressed promptly, which made the entire learning process much easier. A highlight of each semester was the Coffee-Cookies-Chat sessions, where students had the chance to casually network and interact with Economics staff and lecturers. These relaxed gatherings not only helped foster connections but also created a sense of community that made my time at UEA even more enjoyable. Their commitment to engaging with students outside of class truly added to the fun and supportive atmosphere of the program.

A memory I’ll always cherish is meeting and studying with people from all around the world. It was an amazing experience that helped me develop a global perspective, which I believe is essential in today’s connected world. Every day, I walked with friends from different backgrounds, shared meals and exchanged ideas with classmates who had different educational experiences. We often chatted about everything, from academic topics to cultural traditions, and learning from each other’s perspectives was truly eye-opening. This constant sharing of ideas and experiences made my year at UEA even more enriching and taught me the importance of understanding and respecting different cultures. It was a unique part of my MSc journey that I will always cherish. Additionally, the University of East Anglia offers a great environment for students to relax and unwind from the stresses of studying. UEA has a large, beautiful lake where my friends and I would often go for walks during study breaks and it was always refreshing for the mind. The Sportspark at UEA is another fantastic place for students to stay active, with everything from a fully equipped gym to indoor and outdoor sports halls. It was also where I spent many hours playing badminton with my friends. The campus overall is wonderful, offering plenty of spaces for everyone to enjoy, whether for relaxation or physical activity.

Looking back, choosing the School of Economics at UEA was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The MSc journey here was not just an academic experience, but a truly rewarding adventure. From the inspiring faculty to the amazing friendships and the vibrant campus life, every moment has contributed to my growth in ways I never expected. I’m grateful for the knowledge, the connections, and the memories that have shaped my path. It’s been a journey worth every step, and I can say with confidence that my time at UEA has set me on a strong, exciting course for the future.
