UEA’s Development, Alumni and Campaigns Office hosted an evening at The Enterprise Centre to welcome our newest cohort of donor-funded scholars. This annual welcome event brought together more than 50 students from diverse academic backgrounds; all recipients of scholarships made possible by the generosity of UEA’s donors.
This year, the event featured a lively and interactive Q&A panel, where scholars Francis Buckle, Christianah Ezindu, and Violeta Bollano, were joined by Head of Wellbeing (Access and Early Intervention) Jock Downie to discuss their journeys, goals, and experiences at UEA so far. Jock also introduced UEA’s student wellbeing support services, highlighting the resources available to help students succeed. This conversational setting gave everyone the opportunity to ask their own questions and hear firsthand about the impact of donor support and the unique paths each scholar is pursuing.
Francis Buckle, the 2023 recipient of the MJS Scholarship in Law, shared his reasons for choosing UEA:
" UEA has a really tight-knit community, both in the course and outside of it. Since September, I’ve been volunteering at the UEA Law Clinic, which has been an incredibly enjoyable experience. It’s allowed me to give back, and it was something I had in mind even before I applied to UEA."
When asked about advice for new scholars, Francis encouraged them to dive into student life:
"Just go for it - sign up for clubs and societies! It’s the best way to meet people and build skills. Participating in mooting competitions through the Law Society has been excellent practice for a career in advocacy."
Christiana Ezindu, who received a Lesley Williams Masters in Nursing Scholarship last year and is pursuing an MSc in Adult Nursing (Pre-registration), spoke passionately about her calling:
"Nursing has always been my passion, even back in my home country. It gives me a sense of fulfilment - seeing others happy and making sure they’re okay. I chose UEA because I wanted a supportive community where I’d feel included, and UEA has offered that and more."
She also echoed Jock’s words, highlighting the importance of utilizing university support:
"Always maintain a positive attitude and persevere—it goes a long way in any chosen path. And make use of resources like the Wellbeing Team and the Learning Enhancement Team. They’re there to support you."
2023 recipient of the Schilizzi Foundation Scholarship, Violeta Bollano who is studying Economics and Finance, shared her perspective on making the most of the university experience:
"The three years will fly by, so grab every opportunity that comes your way. As they say, the sky’s the limit."
Their stories really resonated with the room, highlighting the strong sense of community and opportunity that UEA fosters.
As the panel concluded, scholars and guests shared conversations, laughter, and made new connections over refreshments, with the evening closing on a note of anticipation for the journey ahead.
We look forward to following the accomplishments of these talented scholars as they continue to thrive at UEA.
