Your UEA IT Account

In order to access your IT services at UEA, you will need to set up an additional layer of security in addition to your password. Multi factor authentication (MFA) allows us to all to protect our accounts against cyber-attacks, keeping our personal data and that of the University safe. When you first log into your account that you will be given as part of the Registration process, you will be asked to set up MFA. This is similar to how you may access your online banking, shopping and streaming services.

The UEA recommended method is to use the Microsoft Authenticator app, which is available in the App store for Apple users and Google Play for Android users.

What device should I use at University?

Think about what you will be using a computer for. Will you need to access a specific piece of software? If so, please check the software manufacturer’s website for minimum hardware specifications.

Some students find a laptop more convenient than a desktop computer. Having a portable device allows you to work from your room, in groups across campus, take notes in a lecture or study in one of our many study spaces.

A tablet may be useful if you want to carry a lightweight device to take notes in lectures, do research or revision, access course materials or just keep up with your emails. You will need access to a desktop or laptop computer as well, particularly when typing assignments or if using specialist software.

A desktop computer may be better if your course has certain specialist or high-powered requirements. For example:

  • Video editing, computer simulation or creating 3D graphics
  • Connecting to specialist external equipment, e.g. microscopes or scientific equipment
  • Using specialist assistive technology, e.g. voice recognition or larger screens

Thinking about this will help you decide which device meets your needs now, and possibly, your future requirements over the next few years. This will support you in getting the most out of your time at UEA.

Getting connected

Our data network (both wired and wireless) provides resilient, fast connections across offices, student residences and teaching spaces. The network links to our on-site data centre services, Cloud services (e.g. Office 365), as well as the wider Internet. We aim to have the campus network available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, except when we do planned maintenance that we’ll let you know about in advance.

Note that by connecting your device to the university network you agree to abide by the UEA Conditions of Computer Use policy.
Connecting to the network in student residences

Students living on campus can connect to the UEA wired network in student residences only. You’ll find the socket on the bottom of the wireless access point in your room. There is no need to register your device, you can connect automatically. You will need an Ethernet cable which we have available at UEA.

What devices can I connect

Examples of devices that can be connected to the wired network include:

  • Games consoles: Play Station, Xbox
  • Desktop PCs
  • Apple Macs
  • Smart TV's

Connecting to wireless network on campus

The wireless network at UEA is available across most of the campus and student residences. We are increasingly expanding our coverage, to include places like the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital to support those in the Faculty of Health.

eduroam

The main wireless network at the UEA is called eduroam (education roaming) a secure, world-wide wireless service used by the international research and education community.

eduroam allows students, researchers and staff from participating institutions, to obtain wireless connectivity across our campus and will also work when visiting other participating institutions. For eduroam to work at other institutions you need to have set it up on your device at your home institution first.

We can help you set this up on your devices when you arrive on campus.

Examples of devices that can be connected to eduroam include:

  • Windows laptops
  • Apple Mac laptops, iPads and iPhones
  • Android devices with Play Store access

dynamic

We have launched a new wireless service across the campus which lets us mimic a home broadband for those devices we cannot connect via eduroam.  We simply allocate you a unique code so you can connect your device.

Examples of devices that are connected via dynamic include:

  • Game consoles: Nintendo Switch
  • Android without the Play Store: Huawei branded devices
  • Chromebooks
  • Echo Dot (third generation onwards)

Remote Access

Connecting to the UEA Desktop is possible from almost any device from anywhere with an internet connection. The UEA desktop provides you with access to the software available on our teaching and IT Area PC’s. You can also access your data on the Central File Store and print to PrintPlus+ devices.

Communication and Collaboration

Email on your mobile

Email services at UEA are provided by Microsoft Office 365. Your UEA emails can be accessed in various ways. The great thing is, all your data is stored on cloud servers, offering plenty of space. You won’t need to worry about your email service going down at busy times either, you can just focus on your study.
You can access your UEA email from anywhere in the world where you have an internet connection; phones, tablets and wearables can be configured to access your email using your UEA login details. We can also advise you on maintaining robust security across your devices.

Accessing your timetable

Every year, after Registration is complete, your timetable will be automatically produced with all your lecture and seminar sessions booked into your UEA calendar. Your timetable can be viewed on the Student Page in eVision or on your mobile device through the Microsoft Outlook app.

Microsoft Office 365

Don’t worry about buying an expensive copy of Microsoft Office, we provide it to UEA students for free with the ability to install it on up to five different devices. This transforms the way you work using lots of free software, massive free cloud storage and free apps. Use the Office apps through your browser to open Word, PowerPoint and Excel documents, removing the need to install any extra software.

Free Specialist Software

We know how important it is that you have access to the software you need. We offer free access to specialist software specific to your studies, such as SPSS, ArcGIS, Stata or MatLab. If you would rather install our specialist software on your own device, we provide licences to enable you to work off-campus or in one of our open access areas.
