About Me:
My name is Daniel, and I am a History student at UEA. I am excited to talk about disability as my past and present-day experiences are things I would like to bring forward to help others.
My course and my studies:
I am studying for a bachelor's in History here at UEA. I have always had an avid interest in writing, reading, and learning about history with some of my favourite areas being Britain and Eastern Europe.
What is your favourite thing about your course?
I enjoy the flexibility and variation of my modules. I have been purposely adventurous with my module selection as I want to embrace new challenges and explore different areas of history.
Adjustments:
I have had arrangements put in place during my time at UEA regarding having extra time to complete coursework. Since being diagnosed with a long-term health condition, it became far more difficult to complete assessments on time. Having the extra time through the means of extensions means I can complete assessments to the best of my ability.
Support at UEA:
I have received support from my academic advisor, my seminar leaders, and my lecturers. They have all been very understanding and supportive throughout my studies.
My journey to UEA:
I chose UEA because it looked to be a supportive, inclusive, and friendly university with an exciting history course. Because of my caring responsibilities, I received a conditional offer from the university, which I managed to achieve at A-Level.
As my condition was diagnosed whilst being at university, I was not eligible for adjustments at sixth form. However, my condition was affecting me at this point despite not knowing what it was, and it was much harder to do exams because of it. Equally, my caring responsibilities at home made it harder to make time to do coursework and revise for exams during sixth form. The support network I have at university is helping me achieve my best.
What would I have done differently?
I do not think I would have done anything differently. I enjoyed UEA from my very first visit and felt certain that it was the place I wanted to be.
What is something I wish I knew before starting university?
It is important as a student that you know where the first port of call of help is. The place that everyone should be aware of in the university is the Student Information Zone [SIZ], located on The Street in the heart of campus. They will be able to answer any questions and address concerns and will look to support you by signposting the next service that may help you. Being aware of the Student Support Centre in the Wherry Building nearby may also be helpful.
Hobbies and interests / clubs and societies:
I am a part of the History Society and like to engage in the activities they hold. They do some wonderful tours of Norwich and hold guest lectures on various topics.
I like to go on walks and spend time reading, both fiction and non-fiction. I enjoy visiting historical sites and going to museums.
I also enjoy watching television with my favourite show being Top Gear.
I play the guitar and drums. I enjoy listening to a wide range of music - some of my favourite bands include Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Tears for Fears, Queen, Coldplay, UB40, Electric Light Orchestra, Dire Straits, the Stone Roses, the Verve, the Smiths, the Clash, the Who, and Pink Floyd.
I love football and I am an avid supporter of Ipswich Town Football Club, having regularly attended matches all my life.
My favourite thing about UEA / Norwich:
I like to walk around the lake at UEA and unwind by embracing nature.
Within Norwich, I like the Plantation Gardens for similar reasons. I also love the different museums in Norwich, including the Bridewell, Strangers Hall and Norwich Castle.
My future plans are...
I would like to return to complete a PGCE and begin a career as a teacher.
