I’m Thomas Green from Chelmsford in Essex and am studying BSc Business Finance and Economics.

Why did you choose to study at UEA?

I came to an open day and attended the events ran by the economics School. I liked the fact that graduates from here had very good potential career prospects. I really liked the process of learning that UEA has, where we have with pre-lecture content, lectures, workshops, seminars, open office hours and the learning enhancement team. I was also reassured by the lecturers that my lack of maths knowledge wouldn’t be an issue as anyone who didn’t take a-level maths or didn’t feel confident with their maths were enrolled in an introductory maths course which covers the maths knowledge you need to succeed on the course.

Do you have a favourite module, and can you tell us why?

My favourite modules have been introductory microeconomics and maths. I really like microeconomics as it links in our economic theory to a lot of the maths we learn in the maths module. I find it satisfying being introduced to a new concept that I initially don’t understand, to then be able to do the maths and then link it to the real world.

What is the best and the most unexpected thing about studying at UEA?

The most unexpected thing for me is the number of friends I’ve made. Uncertainty about the people I would meet was one of my concerns with deciding to come to the university, but I’ve met friends for life here. UEA has great social facilities, such as the student union bar, the LCR which is a club for UEA students, and we are only a 20-minute bus journey from the town centre which picks you up from the university and drops you straight off in the middle.

What do you do for socialising, or any other extra-curricular activities?

I am in a society called the Finance and Investing society, and a first-year course representative for the society. This society is great for first years as it boosts your employability massively. Workshops are hosted which shows you what factors to consider when analysing stocks, we have the Oakwood fund which is where you are split into teams of 6 and research an industry in the stock market, eventually presenting this research and having a winning group. UEA alumni are also invited in to do talks/discussions. For socialising, me and my flatmates often play board games in the kitchen, and go into town/LCR on Thursday and Saturday nights.
