My name is Ayomide Oyewusi, but most people call me, Ayo. I am from Nigeria, and I am a third-year student on BSc Economics with Accountancy, and I have modules from both the School of Economics and the Norwich Business school.

When I was in high school, I enjoyed studying both accountancy and economics and really wanted to be able to specialise in both subjects. When I started applying to universities, my priorities were to find a School that would offer me the opportunity to study a combined course, a School that was on top of the league tables, and preferably a serene city as I grew up in a relatively quiet place. UEA perfectly fitted what I wanted.

The lecturers at the School of Economics, are all very nice, warm, and welcoming. My favourite module must be Introductory Econometrics. I started off not sure about how I would find the module because it felt quite abstract, and I probably would not have done it if it were not a compulsory module. I decided to have an open mind and gave it a try. The module is based on using STATA (a specialised statistical software) every week, and I practiced using the software a lot and ended up understanding it well and enjoying every task I had to do for that module. This module was one of the reasons I opted to do a Dissertation (an optional module) as it would give me the chance to use the software again for my empirical work and data analysis.

One of my favourite things about UEA is the beautiful lake. During my first year, I would take walks by the lake or just sit and listen to music. The environment around the lake is very calming and good to relax before a lecture. Also, the architectural design of the Ziggurat accommodation opposite the lake is beautiful to see especially at night with the lights on. The Sainsbury’s Centre for Visual Arts is also a lovely place, seeing a lot of artworks and specifically very nice to see quite a lot of pieces from Africa.

I tend to spend my free time watching movies and listening to music, I enjoy handcrafts, I love to crotchet handmade clothing, braid hair, and I enjoy going to the gym. I am part of the African and Caribbean Society, and we go out for food and drinks with friends to have fun. I try to visit new places and speak to people, share thoughts together which is great for networking.

UEA has overall been an amazing experience so far, I am glad I have had the opportunity to be part of the UEA Economics community. I would recommend UEA to any international student who wants a welcoming environment, a university that provides support all through and gives you an amazing academic and social experience.
