Overview
The South Asia Study Network (SASN) at the University of East Anglia (UEA) is co-convened by Juvaria Jafri and Anuradha Sajjanhar. The group was formed in 2025 as an initiative to accentuate and expand the work of scholars who research and teach on themes related to the South Asian region, which includes India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan and Burma/Myanmar.
SASN is a platform for scholarly collaboration and critical engagement on a diverse range of topics with relevance to South Asia, including politics, policy, economics, sociology, history, culture, and international relations. SASN builds on the successes of two existing initiatives at UEA: One, UEA’s New Area Studies Centre, and two, the India Dialogue.
The New Area Studies Research Centre offers opportunities for SASN to contribute to the activities of a multidisciplinary, multiregional project, rooted in communities and their contexts. This will allow SASN members to not only engage with a wider audience but also to advance innovative methodologies and perspectives, with a view to contributing to the research output of the NASRC.
The India Dialogue Group, led by Dr Daniel Rycroft (HIS) has over the past decade established itself as UEA’s most active project to connect with scholars and institutions in India, facilitating the internationalisation of UEA. It is anticipated that the India Dialogue Group will be an integral part of the new SASN and play a foundational role in establishing similar dialogue groups in other parts of the region.
