ROMLIT is an innovative project that develops Early Years Literacies through Gypsy, Roma and Traveller heritage, culture and lived experiences.
The project explores how literacy is shaped across homes, schools, communities and everyday life. Moving beyond narrow definitions of reading and writing, ROMLIT understands literacy as a social and cultural practice connected to storytelling, creativity, language, relationships and belonging.
ROMLIT aims to:
recognise and celebrate the diverse literacies of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children and communities
challenge deficit approaches within early years education
strengthen connections between homes, schools and communities
support more inclusive and culturally responsive literacy practices
co-create meaningful literacy resources, training and practices with children, families and educators
The project uses participatory, creative and child-led approaches that value children and families as active creators of knowledge. Through collaborative work with schools, communities, artists and professionals, ROMLIT develops resources, workshops and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) opportunities that support educators and carers working with Gypsy, Roma and Traveller children.
At its core, ROMLIT seeks to create educational spaces where children’s languages, cultures, histories and experiences are recognised, valued and reflected positively in early years literacy practices.
Every story matters. Every literacy counts.
