About this site

This site is editorially independent and hosted by UEA. It is run by UEA Law Clinic in partnership with Norfolk Community Law Service.

It is not linked to

  • HM Court and Tribunals Service

  • The Ministry of Justice

  • The Judiciary

  • The local family justice board

If you have a request for something for us to cover on this site, do email law.clinic@uea.ac.uk. We can’t guarantee to add anything, as it depends on workload, but we will consider any ideas carefully.

We cannot offer legal advice through this site or by email. This is not because we are being difficult, but for insurance and regulatory reasons. There are no exceptions to this. However, the people behind this site offer free legal advice via Norfolk Community Law Service to those in the Norfolk area.

You can find other sources of free legal advice here.

Thanks and acknowledgements

This site is almost wholly written by Polly Morgan, who is Professor of Family Law at UEA, a practising solicitor of twenty years’ experience, and the author of a leading textbook on family law. She trains other solicitors for the Law Society of England and Wales and is the cases editor of the Financial Remedies Journal, and a trustee of the Transparency Project, which is a charity that aims to make family law clearer for people to understand. She is the Director of UEA Law Clinic, which offers free legal advice, and volunteers with Norfolk Community Law Service’s family and domestic abuse team.

The identification of useful resources as well as the original drafts of many of the short guides are courtesy of Norfolk Community Law Service, the partners of UEA Law Clinic. NCLS has been involved in giving free legal advice to people in Norfolk for 40 years. The family and domestic abuse team, managed by Tamsin Roques, has been fantastic at helping to get this site off the ground.

We are also grateful to the people who helped us with writing or checking information, including other academics, solicitors, barristers, and financial advisors:

  • Charlotte Bendall, an academic at University of Birmingham

  • Samantha Davey, an academic at University of Essex

  • Diane Fish, Later Life, Mortgage and Protection Advisor from Just Financial Planning Ltd

  • Elizabeth Bowden, barrister at College Chambers

  • Tola Amodu, an academic and solicitor at UEA

  • Jo Longe, a solicitor at Longe & Co in Norwich

The local Family Justice Board has given encouragement and suggestions.

Some of the wording in some sections is taken from the model for this site, which was a family court information site for the Bristol court area, and that text was contributed by local lawyers in Bristol. It is used with permission.

Last but by no means least, thanks to UEA Law Clinic’s Lead Student Manager Maya Mokrech, a qualified Texan attorney and UEA Master’s degree student, for the technical build of this site.
