Bringing together more than 200 performers — students, staff, and members of the local community — the choir and orchestra, under the baton of Director of Music Bjorn Bantock, will present Felix Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave) Overture, Op. 26, Carl Maria von Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No 2, Hector Berlioz’s Hungarian March, Johannes Brahms’ Nänie, Op. 82, and Antonín Dvořák’s Te Deum, Op. 10.
Mendelssohn Hebrides Overture opens the programme, where swirling strings and winds conjure the restless motion of sea and stone, as if the landscape itself were breathing in sound. In contrast, Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 2 brings brilliant lightness and flair, a work of agile virtuosity and lyrical charm. The soloist in this performance will be UEA student and Music Centre Award Holder, Grace Patrick.
At the heart of the evening lies a moment of stillness and reflection in Brahms’ Nänie, a deeply moving choral meditation on loss and remembrance. The programme culminates in triumphant splendour with Dvořák’s Te Deum, a work of jubilant faith and rhythmic vitality, that builds toward a resounding final affirmation—an ecstatic release that crowns the evening in celebration, gratitude, and transcendence.
