INTERNATIONAL YEAR ONE IN BIOLOGY

What will I study?

All students complete modules tailored to their chosen degree subjects.

Core Modules:

• Biodiversity
• Biological Chemistry for International Students
• Cell Biology and Physiology for International Students
• English and Skills for Biologists
• Evolution, Behaviour and Ecology
• Molecular Biology and Genetics

How will I be assessed?

Assessment is both formal and informal, designed not simply to pass or fail students, but to help you build on your successes and meet the requirements for entry to the second year of a degree. Marks from the International Year One programme do not count towards the final degree but help the University assess your abilities in your chosen field of study.

You are assessed through a combination of examinations and coursework, which may include:

• Essays
• Reports
• Practical exercises
• Group and individual research projects
• Portfolios
• Oral presentations
• Seminar discussions
• Class tests
• Problem-solving exercises

English language requirements: 

• IELTS 6.0 (with a minimum of 5.5 in writing and no less than 5.0 in other subskills) or equivalent.

Age requirements: 

• 17 years and above.
• All students commencing courses on a published September start date must be 17 years old by 31 December of that calendar year.

Academic requirements: 

• Satisfactory completion of A-levels to the required standards, or first year of overseas university degree with good grades or equivalent.
