Research in the Interdisciplinary Institute for the Humanities foregrounds the exploration of cultural and social challenges through creative, collaborative, and socially engaged scholarship.
Our researchers use innovative, reflexive, and culturally responsive methods, to explore people and the institutions that shape their lives. Our work is informed by critical, decolonial, feminist, psychoanalytic and queer perspectives and we hold a particular expertise in engaging with intersectionally marginalised groups.
We are active across a wide range of disciplines, including literature, culture and creative industries, medical and health humanities, media and cultural studies, gender and sexuality, youth and childhood studies, and the study of cultural and social life - always seeking to foreground meaning, enrich understanding, and support positive social change. Our research also extends to inclusive education and the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, examining how pedagogic practices can foster equitable, accessible, and socially just learning environments and better support diverse student communities.
We specialise in building partnerships with external organisations to develop research that has meaningful, positive impact. Our work is strongly interdisciplinary, building research partnerships with experts from across UEA to share good practice and explore new ways of understanding the world. We are also proud to support the work and provide a bridge to our colleagues researching in: the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, the Sainsbury Institute for the Study of Japanese Arts and Cultures, The Sainsbury Research Unit, and the UEA Publishing Project.
