Shaping the Future of Crime Writing at UEA
Lee Child, creator of the internationally renowned Jack Reacher series, has made an extraordinary philanthropic contribution to establish a new Professorship in Crime Writing at UEA. This landmark gift represents far more than financial support. It is a statement of belief in the power of creative writing, in the value of the crime fiction genre, and in UEA’s unique ability to nurture literary talent.
Investing in People, Creativity and Opportunity
At its heart, this gift is about people. It will directly support students, educators, and the wider creative community by strengthening UEA’s teaching infrastructure and expanding opportunities for engagement with the publishing world, and global audiences.
The funding will establish the Lee Child Professor of Crime Writing alongside a dedicated administrative role focused on engagement and delivery. Together, these new posts will enhance visibility, industry partnerships, broaden access to expertise, and create more opportunities for students to develop their craft in a professional context.
Philanthropic contributions of this nature are especially significant at a time when higher education faces growing financial pressure. Strategic giving enables universities not only to sustain excellence, but to push boundaries - investing in innovation, deepening external partnerships, and extending their global reach.
For a long time, I have watched and admired UEA's expertise in creative writing and, in particular, its postgraduate crime writing unit, which displays both rigorous process and spectacular results. UEA is Britain's "writer's university" - like University of Iowa is in the U.S. - and I'm delighted to support it in whatever way I can. I expect it to go from strength to strength - a perfect paradigm of academic excellence producing practical, real-world success for its lucky participants.

A Lasting Partnership with UEA
Lee Child’s support reflects a longstanding relationship with UEA built on shared commitment to excellence in creative writing. Long before this gift, he was actively involved with the University’s crime writing community - delivering masterclasses, shaping its pioneering MA in Crime Fiction, and contributing his literary archive to the British Archive for Contemporary Writing.
That continued engagement makes this latest gift particularly meaningful. It builds on over a decade of collaboration and demonstrates the lasting impact that strong relationships between donors and institutions can achieve.
And there is no denying the excitement this brings. Having a figure of Lee Child’s stature champion UEA is something to celebrate—his enthusiasm and belief in the University’s work are as powerful as the funding itself.
Strengthening a World-Leading Programme
UEA’s MA in Crime Fiction, founded by Professor Henry Sutton, has long been at the forefront of innovation in creative writing education. Designed to professionalise the genre and ensure students graduate with a completed manuscript ready for publication, the low-res part-time programme bridges the gap between academia and industry in a way few others can, particularly allowing for greater inclusion.
Henry Sutton’s leadership has been central to this success. His vision to treat crime fiction as a serious and critically engaged literary form has helped position UEA as a global leader in the field.
This new professorship is both a recognition of that expertise and an opportunity to build on it. With additional resources, the programme can expand its reach, strengthen links with industry, and create even more dynamic learning experiences for students.
Expanding Global Impact
Crime fiction is one of the most widely read genres in the world, cutting across cultures and borders. UEA’s role in shaping this landscape is already significant, with graduates entering the publishing world with professionally developed work and strong industry connections.
This philanthropic gift will amplify that impact—supporting public events, enhancing use of literary archives in teaching and research, and fostering greater engagement with audiences beyond the University. Primarily it will enhance the teaching team.
It positions UEA not only as a centre of academic excellence, but as a global hub for crime writing, where creativity, research, and industry collaboration intersect.
The Power of Philanthropy
As UEA continues to develop its philanthropic community, support like this demonstrates the difference that visionary giving can make. It enables bold ideas to flourish and ensures that areas of excellence - like creative writing - continue to thrive and evolve.
Lee Child’s contribution is, quite simply, transformative. It celebrates what UEA does best, strengthens its foundations, and opens new doors for the next generation of writers.
And thanks to this generous act, the future of crime writing at UEA looks brighter and more exciting than ever.
