Novelist and short story writer Ali Smith Novelist and short story writer Ali Smith

Ali Smith GraduationThe passion of the teaching staff at UEA is encapsulated in this speech that novelist and short story writer Ali Smith gave in the summer, as she received her Honorary Doctorate of Letters.

She was a Writing Fellow at UEA in 1999, and in 2013 she returned as a UNESCO City of Literature Visiting Professor and taught on the Creative Writing MA.

In her speech she remembers her interview for her first job here, meeting with WG Sebald and Lorna Sage; the impact, the passion and the enthusiasm of those teaching; and how UEA gave her the space to develop as a writer. Set in a week of celebration as over 4,000 students became alumni, Ali’s speech really captured the spirit on campus, and shows exactly why so many students and graduates are proud to be UEA.
