English language requirements for postgraduate research

International applicants are required to provide evidence of proficiency in the English language, if English is not their first language. If you need to provide this evidence it will be listed as a condition on your offer letter. Minimum English language requirements for Postgraduate Research programmes are as follows:

Faculty of Arts and Humanities (HUM)

All research programmes within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (HUM) require an overall score of IELTS 7.0 with a minimum of 7.0 in Writing and 6.5 in the other individual components.

English language requirements for individual schools of study

Our offer letter will detail the IELTS requirement of your course. The university also accepts TOEFL and Pearson Academic English.

TOEIC tests are also accepted. These tests are considered by UKBA to be valid for two years.

You will be able to find out how to take these examinations from your college or University, or from the local office of the British Council.
