Chemistry was the first School to admit students when the University was established in the 1960s. We have a reputation for high quality research with a multidisciplinary outlook, an innovative teaching programme and a supportive learning environment.
The 2011 Guardian league table ranked the School 14th in the UK. Our ethos is to provide research-led teaching with a multidisciplinary perspective. The school comprises of about 30 faculty members and over 100 postdoctoral and postgraduate researchers. We offer a friendly environment to support all aspects of your studies, and aim to provide you with the opportunities to reach your full potential and career aspirations. A particular strength of the teaching programme are our courses with a year abroad or placements in leading industrial companies.

Lecturer in Forensic Science Appointed
Steve Day has recently joined the School of Chemistry as a lecturer in Forensic Science after 30 years in the Forensic Science industry with the Metropolitan Police Forensic Science Laboratory and then the Home Office’s Forensic Science Service. Read more
