Involvement in Postgraduate Research

We offer many types of postgraduate research degrees, including:

• Masters by Research (MScR) – one year full-time or two years part-time.

• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) by Publication – six months part-time (for those who have already carried out extensive published research).

• Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – three years full-time or six years part-time.

Our postgraduate researchers work at the heart of active research teams investigating a wide range of research areas within our Faculties, i.e. Arts and Humanities, Medicine and Health Sciences, Science and Social Sciences. Most of UEA’s research focuses on tackling the major challenges facing the world. Our research has significant impact on policy and practice: 91 per cent of our research is rated as ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. We’re also in the UK top 20 for research quality and our research is 16th for impact and the sixth most highly cited in the UK – find out more about our latest research.

Business, industry and public sector involvement in UEA’s postgraduate research programmes takes many forms, including:

• Being a collaborator on a research project

• Being part of industry advisory groups

• Contributing to training to ensure postgraduates develop the right skill set for your organisation and your sector

• Hosting a postgraduate research student

• Financially supporting scholarships or internships

• Being part of the supervisory team (mentoring)

• Becoming an industry mentor to  researchers working on technology or heritage projects through the i-Teams programme

We are involved in a significant number of partnerships with other universities and research centres through our prestigious Doctoral Training Partnerships and Centres for Doctoral Training – enabling you to benefit from the expertise across the best areas for your field of study.

Our local links include the unique world-leading cluster of organisations in Norwich Research Park, which hosts an internationally renowned community of researchers and clinicians and includes our campus, four research institutes, and a university hospital.

We work closely with partners to access research funding opportunities from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). This is the national funding agency investing in science and research in the UK, bringing together the seven Research Councils (AHRC, ESRC, EPSRC, BBSRC, NERC, MRC, STFC), Innovate UK and Research England. We also work with other funders such as Wellcome Trust, British Heart Foundation, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the Leverhulme Trust and charities.

We work with different types of non-academic organisations, including small and medium sized enterprises, as well as with well-established brands in business and the third and public sector.
