Your University Questions, Answered.

Does it look bad if I take a gap year? Reena, Nottingham

Our Answer:

There is nothing wrong with taking a gap year, but it really depends what you do. If you went on a long holiday to Thailand, partying on the beach, or if you took a year out as you didn't know if uni was for you, it may not look great!

An alternative to this would be to travel, work, do some volunteering or anything to develop your skills - this can be seen as a positive thing.

As long as you explain in your personal statement what you did/are intending to do with your gap year and how it will benefit you as a student, universities will see that you're ready for higher level study.

Have a look around on student websites and forums to find out what other people have done - The Student Room is a good place to start.
