The small city with a big ❤ The small city with a big ❤

Norwich is an independent city with a big heart, and every year we welcome thousands of students to make themselves at home here. Our distinctive city with its laid back culture offers both an economical and cosmopolitan lifestyle – you’ll soon find there’s nowhere quite like it.

Setting up home in a new place is an exciting time. Small enough to explore on foot but big enough to have lots to offer, Norwich is a fantastic fusion city, bringing together the historic and modern with many surprising twists and turns amongst its cobbled streets.

What's going on?

As England’s first UNESCO City of Literature there’s plenty of culture on offer at our many art galleries, music venues, theatres, cinemas and of course our beloved football ground, Carrow Road. And if you’re after some medieval history, there’s Norwich Castle which is full of facts and mysteries about Norwich’s past.

Norwich has two big shopping centres, ‘Norwich lanes’ which contain lots of independently run outlets as well as the bustling, big brands of intu Chapelfield shopping mall.

We are also a superb destination for food lovers with cafés, bars and restaurants and one of the country’s oldest and largest open-air markets. There is also a thriving music scene (see Norwich Arts Centre plus the Waterfront just for starters)  and several theatres including Norwich Theatre Royal and Norwich Playhouse, so if you fancy watching some comedy, a play or a musical you have this practically on your doorstep.

So as a postgraduate research student at UEA, you’ll be immersed in a city that has lots to offer:

Getting around Norwich

One of the great things about this city that you’ll soon notice is that most things are in walking distance, so you never need travel far once you’re in the city. You’ll pick up on its sense of community quickly, and find that whatever your interests Norwich is a great backdrop to your time at UEA.

The city is just a short 20 minute journey by bus from UEA, with buses running regularly. And if you’d prefer to bike it, UEA and the city centre are linked by cycle routes.

Norwich is home to Norwich International airport which goes to a variety of different countries, and you can travel to London in just under 2 hours from Norwich Train Station. UEA campus also has a National Express coach pick up which goes to Victoria Station in London and a mega bus stop to a variety of locations across the UK.

Norwich also has great transport links to London either by train which takes under two hours or by coach where you’ll find a pick up point from UEA’s campus. Norwich train station is around 20 minutes by bus from UEA’s campus, and provides great links to a range of places.

Alongside the city experience, Norwich is surrounded by countryside and seaside as well as the long stretch of The Norfolk Broads. You’ll be able to see these stunning landscapes for yourself within an hour or so via public transport links. Visiting rural Norfolk can make for a great time out with friends to ensure you have a work/life balance during your research. We could recommend lots of places to visit, but to name a few there is Holt, Wells-next-the-sea and Holkham – each contain miles of coast and places to walk. You’ll be spoilt for choice!
