After missing out on their first-choice university, Theo found where they truly belonged at UEA. This is their Clearing story.
My top choice was Warwick and I was going to study Ancient History and Classical Archaeology. The rest of my university choices were in Scotland because that's where I'm from.
My results didn't go the way I'd hoped, so I didn't get into any of the courses I'd applied for. It was a bit of a shock to the system.
I'm quite lucky because my mum's a teacher. For years she'd done the higher education role alongside teaching, so she knows the UCAS system really well. We sat down together that morning and started looking through UCAS and Clearing.
For whatever reason we said, "Let's forget about History."
I'd always loved English at A Level and I'd always done as much drama as I could, so she suggested we look at English and Drama courses instead.
My ex-girlfriend was studying English Literature and Creative Writing at UEA and graduating that year. UEA had been her first choice, so I'd heard loads about it already and how good it was. The English department has a really good reputation.
Once I looked properly at the course, it seemed like a really good course at a really good university.

As a queer person, I can walk into any room at UEA and know I can be myself. That's a fantastic feeling.

Looking back, it's been fantastic. The lecturers have all been amazing. The English department is full of brilliant academics who are incredibly passionate about what they teach.
I've only really started thinking about it recently, but I've completely fallen in love with technical theatre. Being close to Norwich has opened up even more opportunities through its fantastic theatre scene, and I'm seriously thinking about going into technical theatre after university. I've done loads of work outside the university as well as within it.
The Drama department is incredibly welcoming. There are only about thirty-five people in my year, so everyone knows everyone. Theatre is naturally collaborative. You have to work together. If one person doesn't do their job, the whole production suffers.
As a queer person, I can walk into any room at UEA and know I can be myself. That's a fantastic feeling.
Norwich is also such a historic city. I still get to enjoy history just by walking around. There's the castle, the old buildings... it still scratches that itch.
