UEA PHYSIOTHERAPY LECTURER, NICOLA HANCOCK IS SEEKING TO HELP STROKE SURVIVORS BY SECURING SUPPORT FROM THE DESIGN COUNCIL TO DEVELOP A DEVICE THAT COULD SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCE REHABILITATION.

Dr Nicola Hancock has been successful in a competitive application to participate in the prestigious Design Leadership Programme at the Design Council. This is an opportunity to follow recognised design processes and have input from an industrial design expert into the development of a device to enhance recovery of motor function after stroke.

Dr Hancock is working with a team from the School of Health Sciences, including Professor of Neurorehabilitation, Prof Valerie Pomeroy, along with an expert design associate. This design work emerged directly from Dr Hancock’s PhD thesis, which explored the use of Upright Pedalling as a possible tool for the rehabilitation of walking after stroke. The team will also be working with therapy staff and stroke survivors to ensure that possible end users of a new rehabilitation device are consulted in the early stages of development of the next prototype; this kind of engagement is essential to successful design.
