My name is Zaafirah Haider and I come from a very culturally rich city called Kolkata in India which is also known as the city of joy.
I came to Norwich on holiday a few years ago and really loved the UEA campus. It is conveniently located in the city of Norwich and placed on a luscious green land and within the campus there are many amenities, including food shops, pharmacy, different cafes and restaurants but also the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, a fitness club (Sportspark), and the Student Information Zone all in the same place.
I have always had an interest in learning about world economies, markets, risk management and sustainability. Therefore, I took up Economics as my undergraduate course at UEA. The modules provided by the School of Economics here are a good mix of theory and practical applications which makes studying very interesting. Alongside this I have also had the chance to do internships within the school where I have been able to learn more about new software and data analysis which have been a very good learning experience for me.
The academics here have been extremely helpful. We are provided with all the help we need, not only academically but also pastorally with wellbeing and mental health workshops and schemes such as ‘Buddy(Students Unions)’.
I have been able to celebrate my culture at UEA since there are many societies and clubs, which organise many events all year round such as Go Global, Cultural balls and desi music events.
On coming to UEA I have also had the opportunity to be the student ambassador for India and the School of Economics. Through this job I have been able to talk to prospective students about my experience here and help others.
Being far away from home can be intimidating at first but the city of Norwich is very warm and welcoming. Going into town from campus only takes around 15 minutes by bus and exploring the markets, Norwich Cathedral and the riverside is a great experience.
