My UEA Story: Cecilia Calle
My name is Cecilia Calle and I am studying Society, Culture and Media at UEA. I am currently in my second year in the university, and I can honestly say coming here is one of the best decisions I’ve made! Because I was raised in different countries, a multicultural environment was a crucial aspect when choosing where to study, something that I quickly found here at UEA, which is already well known for its academic excellence and high student satisfaction, as well as a very high reputation in media related courses like mine.
In addition, living on campus in my first year allowed me to meet wonderful, diverse people that became very good friends and a helping hand when needed, while also having all the perks of living on campus. Being both Venezuelan and Colombian, living this far away from home felt like a very challenging experience at first, especially because it was the first time I was coming to the UK, but in the space of a few weeks UEA and Norwich became my home away from home.
When first arriving, everything can feel a little intimidating, especially for an international student, because everything feels so different and new compared to what we are used to! But here at UEA, there is always someone to help you when you find yourself in these situations: there are societies for all sorts of interests, services like the Dean of students to help you feel comfortable with your academic skills and constantly improve them, workshops for every aspect of a student’s life, whether it is learning how to use the library or how to write better essays, interesting public lectures, Career and CV services, excellent facilities and a great international environment, you can find it all! All of these services and opportunities were very important for me, because I was coming from a completely different educational system, so I really needed to feel at ease with my academic abilities.
Additionally, I was really charmed by Norwich and all it has to offer. Norwich is a perfect combination of charming little town with endless activities and interesting things going on, and it is so different from anything I had ever experienced before, as cities in South America can be very big and sometimes daunting. It’s a city full of hidden gems, ranging from little restaurants to a vibrant nightlife, stunning churches and antique shops, and all the great activities a city with both students and a rich history has to offer. The campus is also very beautiful, and has many things to offer. Overall, coming to study at UEA has been an extremely positive experience for me, and it has exceeded my expectations in every way, thanks to all the wonderful things it has to offer, and the welcoming people I’ve met along the way, something very important as a Latin American student!
Mi nombre es Cecilia Calle y estoy estudiando Sociedad, Cultura y Medios en UEA. Este es mi Segundo año en la Universidad, ¡y la verdad es que venir a estudiar en UEA es una de las mejores decisiones que he hecho! Por mi experiencia viviendo y viajando a muchos países en mi infancia y adolescencia, el aspecto multicultural era muy importante para mí y era algo crucial al escoger mi universidad, y es algo que encontré con mucha facilidad aquí en UEA, además de la excelente reputación académica en todas las áreas, y con diplomas relacionados con medios como el mío.
En mi primer año tuve la oportunidad de vivir en las residencias de la universidad, perfectas para estudiantes y con todo lo positivo de vivir en el campus, sobretodo porque toda la vida académica y social están a cortas distancias. Fue una experiencia que me permitió conocer a gente maravillosa de todas partes del mundo, que siempre están ahí para ayudarme cuando lo necesito, además de tener todos los beneficios de vivir en el campus.
Soy venezolana y colombiana, y eso quiere decir que mi pertenencia cultural es muy fuerte, por lo que se me hizo un poco difícil alejarme tanto de casa, pero en el espacio de algunas semanas Norwich y UEA se volvieron rápidamente un hogar lejos del hogar.
Al llegar por primera vez, todo se siente un poco intimidante, especialmente para un estudiante internacional, ¡porque todo es tan diferente y nuevo en comparación con lo que estamos acostumbrados! Pero aquí, en UEA, siempre hay alguien para ayudar cuando uno se encuentra en estas situaciones: hay sociedades de todo tipo de intereses, servicios como el decano de los estudiantes para ayudarte a sentirte cómodo con tus habilidades académicas y la mejora constante de ellas, talleres para cada aspecto de la vida de un estudiante, si se trata de aprender cómo utilizar la biblioteca o cómo escribir mejores ensayos, conferencias públicas interesantes, servicios de carrera y CV, excelentes instalaciones y un gran entorno internacional, se puede encontrar de todo! Todos estos servicios y oportunidades eran muy importantes para mí, porque yo venía de un sistema educativo completamente diferente, por lo que realmente lo necesitaba para sentirme a gusto con mis habilidades académicas.
Pero no todo son siempre estudios: Norwich es una ciudad muy enigmática, y tiene mucho que ofrecer. Es una combinación perfecta de la pequeña y encantadora ciudad con un sinfín de actividades y cosas interesantes, y es tan diferente de todo lo que había experimentado antes, sobretodo porque las ciudades latinoamericanas suelen ser muy grandes y a veces sobrecogedoras. Es una ciudad llena de joyas ocultas, que van desde pequeños restaurantes a una vida nocturna para todas las edades, iglesias impresionantes y tiendas de antigüedades, y todas las actividades de una ciudad con estudiantes y una rica historia tiene que ofrecer. El campus también es muy bonito, y tiene muchas cosas que ofrecer. Venir a estudiar en UEA ha sido una experiencia muy positiva para mí, y ha superado mis expectativas en todos los sentidos, gracias a todas las cosas maravillosas que tiene para ofrecer, y a todas las personas tan acogedoras que he conocido a lo largo del camino, ¡algo muy importante para los estudiantes latinoamericanos!
