    Background

Jane Scarrow, a geologist from the University of Granada (UGR), Spain, uses the mineral zircon to investigate processes in magma plumbing systems beneath volcanoes. Her Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship project combines expertise and knowledge: research lines developed at her home institute, UGR, and the inter-disciplinary work of Jenni Barclay, Professor of Volcanology at the UEA.

    Objectives and Activities

The main objective of the project, VESPER, is to obtain information about magma storage conditions and plumbing systems with a view to considering future volcanic activity. To do this the ages, compositions and crystal cargoes of past eruptions are interpreted in relation to the pre-eruptive behaviour of magmatic systems. An ongoing result of Jane’s stay at the UEA is a two-way exchange of research and teaching knowledge and best practice between the home and host institutes.

    Impact

As part of her Fellowship Jane has had several secondments gaining world-class training at: the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, the Seismic Research Centre, Trinidad and Tobago, and the University of Heidelberg, Germany. She has participated in numerous UEA volcano-outreach activities including the Norwich Science Festival and presenting experiments related to the project VESPER at the “Science is Wonderful” Marie Skłodowska-Curie flagship event in Brussels. Working with a colleague at the University of Hertfordshire and a local primary school she has created geology lesson plans and activities for primary school children using the storybook “The Street Beneath My Feet”.
