ABIRA focuses on development and evaluation of rehabilitation interventions to enhance people's recovery after brain injury. Evidence-based rehabilitation does enhance recovery. Despite this success, many people are left with limitations that impact independence in everyday life activities such as: walking outside; fastening zips and buttons; and communicating with others. 

ABIRA’s distinctive approach merges neuroscience, neurorehabilitation and clinical practice. Specifically, we aim to increase understanding of the neural mechanisms of recovery, then improve interventions and technologies that will transform clinical practice. People with brain injury play a key role in our research through co-production of questions and outputs for clinical impact.

Our MoveExLab facility enables the study of biomechanical and neurophysiological correlates of the movement required for everyday tasks such as standing up, walking, reaching and grasping. By measuring the brain’s connection with muscles and better understanding motor control strategies, we can target recovery mechanisms and produce rehabilitation technology that will ultimately improve rehabilitation outcomes.

Crucial are our local, national and international partnerships with service users, advocacy organisations, clinicians, health service providers and industry. All of these enhance the ability of therapists to provide evidenced-based rehabilitation.
