Leading high quality research evidence to support people affected by addiction

Leading high quality research evidence to support people affected by addiction

We investigate addictive behaviours to address health inequalities and improve lives, with core expertise in nicotine and tobacco research. We use innovative approaches to develop cutting edge behavioural interventions to support diverse groups and test these using gold standard methodology. We work with policy makers, practitioners and members of the public to translate research findings for real world impact.

Incentives for smoking cessation

We are involved in a programme of work evaluating the effectiveness of financial incentives for smoking cessation. Prof. Notley leads the Cocrane review of incentives, working with Dr Gentry. Currently they are evaluating incentives schemes implemented in practice, and aiming to answer key questions about the optimal amount, timing and scheduling of incentives to achieve the greatest impact.

Poly-nicotine use

This study seeks to understand poly-nicotine use, with a focus on nicotine pouches; a tobacco-free oral product which is a relatively new addition to the UK market and their use is poorly understood. We would like to understand the role pouches take in harm reduction, smoking cessation, dependence and health inequalities.

Our approach is to carry out a scoping review of the existing literature on poly-nicotine use. We will interview 25 individuals with experience of their use to capture insights into transitions, motivations, perceived risks and benefits, and usage patterns of nicotine use.
