Are You a Future Student?

Welcome to the UEA Law Clinic website. If you study at UEA Law School you will have the opportunity to apply for various roles in the Law Clinic. We are one of the largest Clinics at any university in the UK. 

Overall, about 150 students work in the clinic for about one half-day per week or one full day per fortnight.  

We have won or nearly won lots of awards. 

Most roles require an application and friendly interview. We understand that many new students won’t have much experience of the law, and that is ok. You have to start somewhere. You may have existing work roles such as working in hospitality which may not be legal experience, but certainly counts as working with a team, being reliable, dealing with difficult clients, and following processes. 

Working in the Clinic involves direct client contact and develops many important legal and transferable skills which are attractive to law firms wanting to employ students, barristers’ chambers, and other professions. Students aren’t just observing - they’re crucial to the substantive legal work that is taking place. 

Here are some of the things that we currently offer. 

Norfolk Community Law Service 

Around 50 students per year volunteer with NCLS across a range of advice services including welfare benefits; debt advice; domestic abuse; family law; employment and discrimination; and immigration; as well as the legal support service which triages the other services. Students are key members of each service, working directly with members of the public and local solicitors. 

Student Outdoor Clerking Scheme 

‘Outdoor clerking’ is the name given to people who attend court as agents for solicitors. Here, our student team members act as agents for a local criminal defence firm, going to court to support the defendant and their barrister. Students read the trial documents and keep notes to report back to the law firm. 

Street Law 

Street Law is a community outreach programme that sees our students developing their knowledge and experience by delivering a wide range of awareness-raising sessions on legal issues in local schools and community groups, and at ‘Law taster' events' on campus. Street Law offers students the chance to develop their legal learning and their team-working and communication skills by introducing legal issues to a wider audience. The audience can experience the law for themselves via a range of fun-filled activities including mock trials, quizzes and game shows. It is run in conjunction with UEA’s outreach team. 

Justice Project 

The Justice Project is run by Louise Shorter, the founder of Inside Justice and who was formerly involved in Rough Justice, a pioneering documentary series. She makes documentaries about potential miscarriages of justice. You can watch her in  

The Justice Project receives applications from prisoners convicted of serious crimes who say that they are innocent, and want help having their convictions overturned. Students read these applications and obtain further case information before looking at potential lines of appeal. Through re-examining evidence and trying to find new lines of enquiry, you could be working on some of the Justice Project’s serious criminal cases, potentially changing the course of someone’s life. 

Personal Injury Clinic 

With a national law firm we have a personal injury clinic, advising members of the public who have been injured. Students receive applications, book meetings, write notes, and follow up with the clients, under the supervision of our law firm partners. 

Shelter 

Shelter is a well-known housing and homelessness charity working with vulnerable people facing housing insecurity. Our student team are housing advice volunteers – they supports one of the only legal aid lawyers in Norfolk doing homelessness law. You will meet and help members of the public and support the legal services team. 

Street Law

The Business Law Clinic 

This is a project that sees students helping start-ups and small businesses. We work with local solicitors, accountants, and enterprise experts to advise people setting up or growing businesses or troubleshooting issues that have arisen.  

Students book meetings, attend the meetings with the advisors and write the attendance notes. Students also undertake a range of projects such as writing business guides for our partners charities or (in 2026/27) helping those leaving prison set up businesses.
