What is PlankTOM?
PlankTOM is a global marine biogeochemical model based on the representation of Plankton Functional Types (PFT). The latest version - PlankTOM12 - represents six phytoplankton, five zooplankton, and bacteria/Archaea. PlankTOM is coupled to the NEMO numerical ocean model. NEMO-PlankTOM is one of the model ensemble members that helps assess the evolution of the ocean CO2 sink in the annual update of the Global Carbon Budget.
The NEMO-PlankTOM code and user manual with full equations is available on GitHub

Plankton Functional Types
Plankton Functional Types (PFTs) represent the diversity of marine micro-organisms by classifying them based on their ecological role, such as their impact on carbon export or trophic level.
Biogeochemistry
PlankTOM represents the full cycles of Carbon, Oxygen, Phosphate, and Silica, and simplified cycles for Iron and Nitrogen. The current version of the model comprises between 40 and 54 biogeochemical tracers.

Physics
The PlankTOM model is coupled to NEMO, a state-of-the-art modelling framework for representation of the physical ocean thermodynamics. For our model we use NEMO Versions 3.6 and 5.0.
