Ending an Umarried Relationship
)
Quick Links
Living with someone or having a child with them, when you’re not married is very different legally to being married.
At the moment there are government proposals to change the law to give cohabitants some rights at the end of the relationship, but these aren’t yet part of the law.
At the moment there are two main legal options for people who are not married, which can be used separately or together:
If you have children together, then one option is the law around financial provision for children. This is under Schedule One Children Act 1989.
Where you have a house together you can claim your share of the property. Where the house is in your ex’s name you may be able to claim some part of its value. The law on this is very complicated.
At the moment, Professor Polly doesn’t have the time to write about these areas of law but she will do so in the future. This page will then be replaced with much more information. You can still get free legal advice about these areas from Norfolk Community Law Service.
