CSNAT Intervention training for use in practice

The Carer Support Needs Assessment Tool Intervention (CSNAT-I) represents a change in practice. This therefore requires preparation and training before getting a practice licence. This involves training both in the use of CSNAT-I and in its implementation in routine practice. We have developed an online CSNAT-I Training and Implementation Toolkit for this purpose. For the online Toolkit go to the CSNAT Intervention training pages.

This webpage is set up to provide access to a CSNAT Intervention Training Manual for those who want to use the CSNAT Intervention, but are unable to access the online CSNAT-I Training and Implementation Toolkit. Recommendations for getting ready for CSNAT Intervention implementation are the same whether you use the online Toolkit or the CSNAT Intervention Training Manual.

The guidance on training, preparation and implementation applies to all versions of CSNAT-I, including CSNAT-I Paediatric.

Getting ready for CSNAT-I implementation

Before you start: Download and read our Planning Guidance for organisations wishing to implement the CSNAT Intervention in practice. This explains the key recommendations of what to have in place before you start implementation. Below we also outline the essential steps for implementing CSNAT-I in practice.

Step 1

Preparation

Get an Implementation Team together, identify ‘Intervention Champions’ and consider resource requirements.

Read how one team prepared for CSNAT-I implementation Getting Started With Implementation.

Step 2

Implementation Team training

The team should complete Learning Unit 1 (using CSNAT-I) and Learning Unit 2 (organisational considerations for implementation).

Step 3

Apply for a CSNAT-I practice licence

For the organisation or department implementing CSNAT-I.

Step 4

Train all practitioners who are going to use CSNAT-I

Practitioners should complete Learning Unit 1, supported by the Implementation Team. We strongly recommend that the Implementation Team and/or Intervention Champions support practitioners completing Learning Unit 1 with a discussion session, using the materials provided in Module 5 of the training manual.

Step 5

Develop an Implementation Plan

Use materials from Learning Unit 2 including designing a CSNAT-I delivery plan to embed CSNAT-I in practice.

Top Tip

"Get some people behind you that are also interested in implementing the CSNAT-I to help sell it to the team members. You need someone on the ground, who’s there, who’s enthusiastic about it, to support the others in it. And who can help give clear pointers, when using it and when having loads of discussions."

The CSNAT Intervention Training Manual

The guidance in the Training Manual applies to all versions of CSNAT-I, including CSNAT-I Paediatric.

Learning Unit 1

Learning Unit 1 covers the use of the CSNAT Intervention in practice and is for everyone involved in using or supporting the use of CSNAT-I within an organisation.

The Implementation Team, Intervention Champions and practitioners who will be using CSNAT-I need to complete Learning Unit 1.

Learning Unit 2

Learning Unit 2 covers the implementation of CSNAT-I within an organisation, the planning process, carrying out a small pilot, supporting colleagues with training and sustaining implementation of CSNAT-I in the longer term.

Only the Implementation Team needs to complete Learning Unit 2.
